Only in LA...

So me and Jane were in Target, looking at board games. I go to reach for Stratego, and so did another gentleman. After some friendly banter about Stratego, Risk and various other board games, the topic shifts to 'the industry.'

It turns out that this guy does visual effects over at Sony. I mention that I'm studying film and VFX, and the discussion advances further into geeky tech talk (my favorite kind.) He casually says "Did you see Narnia?" to which I reply "Yeah..." and he says, in a sarcastic-ish tone "What did you think of those wolves?"

Let me back up for a second here, the first thing that I said when I got out of Narnia was "Did you see those wolves!? They were awful, what the hell happened with WETA?" And it was seeing that which made me fear for the effects in Kong. So, to his query I replied "They looked awful! They were so plasticy, and the fur looked all wrong!" at which point Jane interjects "They totally took me out of the movie!"

He then drops the atom bomb: "Yeah, I was on the team that made the wolves."

Oh God! Here I am, chopping it up with someone who works in the industry, who is being nice enough to talk to me, and I go and insult him! Well, luckily for me, he was really cool about it, and says that he's gotten a lot of crap from his VFX buddies about that. Whew! He then says that he worked on Polar Express, and that he's now on Beowolf, so the discussion takes a better direction.

We chopped it up for a little while longer (until they started flicking the lights on and off- the international symbol for "Get the hell out of the store.") and we exchanged info; he says that we seem to have similar interests.

Sweet.

I made a contact in the industry while shopping for a board game in Target. Only in LA.

Yes, because we live at Target.

Yep, "That was the one thing that didn't work in the movie." Oops! Nice guy though!

Nice story, TC.

I can just see you guys brushing against each other, glancing awkwardly at the other and then quickly looking away as you reach for the same Stratego box. :)

Not in my neighborhood

We goto Target (obviously) but there is a Wal-Mart across the street.

It's like going to a third world country. It is night and day. Freaky.

So, no. Target in my hood is not a Wal-Mart.
