Onlining Workflow Questions

I don't post too many questions (since this site is LOADED with answers) I can usually find answers through searching. Please excuse any redundant Q's.

I enter a short film challenge once a month and have a fairly standard workflow...
Shoot DVX100B, 24pa, squeeze (SD-NTSC)
no capture/import problems (thanks to Noah's 24p DVD)
Usually just perform a regular edit through FCP (in 23.98 timeline) then out to Compressor/DVDSP
final output-DVD.....always the same pleasing results.....until this time.

With this last project I had more layers than usual (video AND audio) as well as (towards the end) effcts/transitions/CC etc... In the course of the edit I had to render a lot to see my edit in real-time in order to finesse it. I've read that FCP is a 'non-destructive' NLE....but I'm guessing that multiple renders are not what you want to go through. It showed in my final output.....very fuzzy. Is there a way to sharpen it up in the end part (FCP>Compressor>DVDSP)?

Which leads me to my main Question...

Should I move my workflow into another codec (Pro Res 422/10-bit Uncompressed) before the (onlining?) heavy end of the edit (filters/transitions/CC)? If so, how would I do that? and what would the rest of my workflow look like afterwards (to Compressor...to DVDSP)?

Thank you in advance

Chris

IIRC FCP's renders aren't cumulative (i.e. if you drop effect Y on top of rendered effect X FCP doesn't render the render file but goes back to the source file and renders both effects from there). Also, I think when FCP exports it goes back to the source files as well. "Non-desctructive" refers to being able to edit and manipulate footage w/o making changes to the actual source file.

The fuzziness you saw just might be a result of pushing the DV footage beyond it's limits. As a test you could copy & paste the sequence from your last project into a ProRes or Uncompressed timeline, send that timeline into Compressor and see what happens.
