Man, honestly, write a book about something and sell it online. Unless you ARE going to be the next YouTube or have somewhere in the area of 200K of funding to start this new online business -- yeah, you're better off writing a book about something you know (or, for that matter, having an iPhone app produced for 500 bucks) and selling it.
It's just -- what you're thinking about, honestly, I just don't think it happens. Or, it happens, but it happens to people with TONS of start up capital. Facebook, YouTube, MySpace -- not happening even on a marginal scale, IMO.
And the ONLY way to make ad revenue is if you have a user BASE. That is, the same people coming back again and again on a daily basis to YOUR SITE (I mentioned DeviantArt before but DVXuser is a decent example on a smaller scale).
So you need to have a MEMBERSHIP style site. You need to give them new content numerous times DAILY (like, say, a forum), and you need to have loads of $$$ if you're not offering something hyper-specific like Videocopilot (which makes its money SELLING stuff, not being a popular site).
