My brother entered an online video contest. Out of over 100 entries, his video was selected to be in the top 5, and is now eligible for a substantial prize.
Unfortunately, there are no more judged rounds -
the final leg of this race is simply based on votes by the public...and I haven't seen much of a PR push by the organizers to bring in an independent audience.
Worse, this is one of those "Vote once a day, every day" contests.
How important can quality be when contest organizers pass off the final resolution and pr duties to entrants? I'm trying to help, but I can't leverage thousands of Youtube, Twitter, or Facebook followers...I'm just not that adept with online marketing.
Now don't get me wrong -- he walked into this with full awareness of the process. The fact that it*was* judged to a top 5 made this contest better than many...the prizes are substantial, and the relatively high profile of the organizer made us think a large PR push was a given.
But at what point do these cease to be video contests, and start being social media competitions? Is it simply foolishness to enter contests that aren't fully and independently judged?
