Online paid download statistics. Where to find?

Been combing the internet for weeks trying to track down these stats and all i find is dang pirate download sites and torrents!

Does anyone know where I can find these stats?

I am about to do an experiment in direct independent movie download sales but would like some stats before I spend a small fortune on what might turn out to be a white elephant.

Any success stories would also be welcome!

Thanks in advance folks.

Extremely difficult to find exact numbers. You will find some articles in Variety and The Hollywood Reporter from time to time that show relative percentages to all other distribution channels for big title names. In those cases it is still in the single digits percentage wise. And If I remember correctly under 3%. But using blockbuster titles is not fair when compared to independent content. As fast actual numbers and downloads, very difficult. You will get stories about individual distribution with DVD etc. but not actual download of digital formats.

Thanks Michael.

I'm really trying to find a less painful way to get my next project to the market without the extremely painful corporate distribution process. In the end, as film makers, we get less than 20% of what an exhibitor gets for just showing our work. My thoughts are as follows: Spend my entire marketing budget on internet marketing and sell the movie purely online. If we hit targets of 20% of traditional exhibitor viewership, we still make up to five times more profit and gain the database... lots of homework to do though as torrents are major competition for online video sales.
