Online Edit System Requirements??

What system do I need to do online editing? (Is ProRess 4x4 online editing??)

I've read so much stuff lately as I am on the verge of buying a new Mac Pro and Final Cut 7... what I want to know is what system requirements do I need to edit whatever footage I have at it's highest quality that I do not need to do an EDL, or re capture etc.

I guess I'm confused. I want to buy a system that I can edit my own projects but be able to handle editing someones elses project whether it be HVX or Red or whatever.

I recall reading a brochure or something by Noah (i think) that mentioned not working with Red footage with anything less than the 8 core 2.26. If so why?

Any insight is appreciated. I'm banging my head against the wall over what system to get, but don't want to kick myself for choosing 4 core over 8 core if it matters for editing capabilities. Thanks.

Any system that will handle what format you intend to online as. I have onlined with G5s. I now online with MacPros. Mac Pro, AJA Kona 3, two ACER computer monitors, and a broadcast HD monitor, large hard drive raid or large internal drives. ProRes 4x4 is a high end codec with ALPHA channel...not needed for a simple online. ProRes 422 works fine. HQ is for 2K workflows.

What camera will you be working with?...what format? I can edit DVCPRO HD all day long on a G5, and online that on a G5...even a Powerbook G4 and MacBook Pro. Get a MacPro, a capture card, enough storage to hold all of that footage, and a way to monitor that footage at full quality.

Because that codec is very processor intensive, and you will want the fastest machine that you can get to handle it.

Get the 8core...

Thanks Shane. I had actually thought of asking you directly as I've been checking in on your site fairly regularly.

(I couldn't find it anywhere on your site, but would love to see a blog or vblog about your editing setup and a break down of what you use.)

I don't have any specific camera that I'd be working with, I just wanted to have a system that could work with the cameras available today, so I could say yes if someone shooting Red or any other higher end camera needed an editor... also with the capability to online edit too.

So in your professional opinion the 2.26 8 core is a better investment than the 2.66 4 core?

8 core is better.

And my online bay consists of...well, at work: Octo 3.0 Ghz MacPro (2008), 8GB RAM, 2x22 Acer computer displays, Sony LMD HD LCD, AJA Kona 3, HDCAM SR deck, Fibrechannel network with SANmp. And speakers and a HUGE 16 channel mixer that I only use 4 channels of.

At home, Octo 3.0, 2x24 Dell monitors, SOny HD CRT PVM14L5, Matrox MXO2, Caldigit HD One...rent decks.
