We've got a project that was shot on a DX100 and edited on FCP. We are trying to do an uncompressed version of the short out to betacam for the client. Our Kona LHe does not have a 24 fps uncompressed setting, only 23.98, which would throw off the time base in the edit (right?). Any suggestions on what setting I should used to capture the footage (which is obviously DV, but color corrected already), and what proceedure to take in order to get the most out of the color-correction and transitions through uncompressed (or HD maybe?) without throwing off the in and outs of the edit and out to beta?

You should be working at 29.97 already, if you shot 24p. If you shot 24PA, then you should be working at 23.98. NEVER EVER work at 24fps straight up. That is for film only...if you are going to be cutting the negative. 23.98 is the 24p standard.

That is why there is no compression setting for 24fps.

And outputting to beta requires 29.97fps...which the Kona LHe can do...adding pulldown to the footage on the fly. But if you are at 24fps now...you are in trouble.

i didn't do the shooting or the edit- only doing the output. the editor (not sure who it was) did all the capturing in 24 fps and edited it in a 24 fps timeline. if I want to rely on the Kona LHe to do the conversion on the fly as it outputs to my beta deck, what setting should I use on the timeline for uncompressed (or should I even use an HD timeline?) to make the most of titles, gfx, fades, and color correction?

No need to use an HD timeline to preserve the quality. If you're using an uncompressed timeline then the "elements" should maintain their quality as best they are going to. As long as the raw elements and CC'n was done and rendered in the uncompressed timeline then you've about done all you can.

And if you have a 23.98 project and go out to a SD format (ie your Betacam), the Kona should hold the duration for you, you're just going to add pulldown and play back at a different rate. If your piece is 20 mins long exactly, at 29.97 it should still be 20 mins long exactly, just that in a given second it should show "30" rather than "24" frames.

cheers.

Does Kona also do HD 23.98 to SD 29.97 downconversion to Quicktime (when you're not going to a deck)?
