Ong-Bak

Caught it tonight on tv and... wow... Never even heard of it before, but watched it till the end titles, because it had the best friggin martial arts I've seen in a movie, period. Seriosly, as much as I enjoy older Jackie's hong-kong flicks (on ocassions, of course, not that I'm a fan :) ), the stuff they do in Ong-Bak is amazing. No cgi or wire-fu crap, just human body pushing the limits of it's abilites + some very smart choreography. It's even rated 7.2 at iMDb. But don't expect an Oscar-worthy or even decent story or character development - see it for the fight and chase scenes, which take 90% of the screen time, you won't regret it.

It is a good flick. One of the best an most popular here in Thailand. The sequel is coming soon and has one of the highest budgets ever for a Thai movie. It's scalled Tum Yum Goong. Check out the trailer.

Thai people are very proud of Ong Bak. I mention it in my class, almost everyday. and pretend like I'm the martial arts guy (Tony Ja). The students love it!

Yep, already discovered Tom yum goong, but it's not a sequel, PK ;) Same crew, but different story.
And they should be proud of it alright, I would be too.

Btw, while watching it I kept thinking, that it reminds me too much of the recent french action films - Taxi series, Transporter, Banlieue 13 etc. Cinematography, editing, music... they even had a writing on the wall in one scene saying "Hi Luc Besson we are waiting for you", according to the trivia on iMDb. Well, it appears he noticed them trying, because the Cast&Crew page on the same site says "Executive Producer (uncredited) - Luc Besson". From what I understand, the version I saw was European, different from the Thai one, produced, cut and scored by him.
