Ong Bak review

So I checked out this flick on Friday.

The movie is merely a showcase of that dudes martial arts and gymnastic skills, and they a unbelieveable. They nicely did "instant replays" of all the cool stunts he does by showing the stunt from all the different angles they shot it, which works well as the moment you see something cool you wish you could see it again and they give it to you. The martial arts and stunts accomplished are 10 out of 10.

Because of the amazing stunts and fighting I didn't care that there wasn't much of a story.

There were couple things that stood out though that made this movie bad in my books.
First and most importantly was bad lighting. Maybe it was just the print at the Famous Players I saw it at, but numerous scenes seem way too underlit.(anyone else experience this?) A lot of the action takes place in a bar where they hold underground fighting. The whole bar was so dark, it hurt to watch it.
Second. They have a car chase scene using little taxi's that are more like motorbike rikshaws(spelling) . It was awful. It didn't cut together at all, and it looked as though they shot most of it using a camcorder. It basically ruined any validity the movie had established with the fighting.

If you want to see some wild stunts and cool fighting, this is a good movie for that. But, if it is as dark in other theatres as it was in mine, you may want to wait until it comes out on video.

On a different lighting note... i watched Predator 2 last night. This movie is beautifully lit and a fun show even with Glover as the star. i also saw the original assault on Precinct 13. Enjoyed it, but found it humorous how basic the movie was, and how they kept showing the exact same shots over and over throughout the movie.

Anyone reading this who's from Vancouver, might be Canada wide for all I know: I was in FUTURESHOP looking for a sappy romantic movie my girlfriend wanted for Valentines when i came across a kick ass deal - Dawn of the Dead 2004 & Shaun of the Dead packaged together selling for only $22.99 . Any zombie lovers out there might want to pick up on this deal. I got mine at Futureshop at Landsdowne in Richmond.

Re: Ong Bak review

I didn't think it was all that bad of a film, sure the writing was terrible, They should've hired a writer to add to the script that was in place, but I bet people would complain if you didn't use the exact translation. The movie was way underlite , almost hurting ,my eye's. The stunts were great through, although I don't share the same view as fasr as needing to see an instant replay of every stunt the guy does.

Re: Ong Bak review

I thought the movie was amazing.
I saw the original Thai version though.
the american version cut A LOT out, and even changed the ending.
They cut out a bunch of scenes where tony jaa speaks and really gives the charaters a little more depth.
and i agree it was under lit, but the only scene it botherd me in was when he was fighting with the weapons in the cave.
but you should check out the original.

Re: Ong Bak review

I have yet to see this movie. I can give a rats ass about the story line. I think this dude is amazing and that's one of the main reasons why I'm going to watch this. There better be some nice looking women in this movie. Some eye candy would be nice. ;)

Re: Ong Bak review

Ong Bak is one of the better Thai movies.  The action scenes and stunts are amazing. It's all real and you must see it to believe it.

I saw Ong Bak 2 years ago, when it first came out. It was a blast! Last year I saw an old Ong Bak handpainted advertisement (8 ft wide and 4 ft tall) sitting in a garbage dump. I paid $5 for it and had it placed in the recreation room of a school. People would walk in and say "Look, ONG BAK!!!" and smile.  The movie makes Thai people feel VERY proud. Haven't seen the International version yet. They are making Part 2 in Australia now. Don't think the plot will be any better.

Re: Ong Bak review

Now I definitely gots to see this flick!

Stabb, they're also selling the DOD2K4/SOTD DVD 2-pack at Costco(might be around the same price, but then again, its Costco).

Re: Ong Bak review

Yeah the repetition of those stunt shots got really annoying.

"Knives for sale." I loved that part.

Re: Ong Bak review

Yeah the shot repitition got old, but I take that as the director doing a sort of jackie chan style rehash. In the older JC movies, if he did a really huge stunt they'd show it from multiple angles.

I've also heard that every time a stunt man gets hurt they show the stunt again. 1x if its a minor injury, 2x if its really bad. (This is just heresay however)

Re: Ong Bak review

I brought a date to watch this with me, she wasn't really into martial arts movies but afterwards all she talked about was the main star and how he's like another Jackie Chan. Don't compare Jackie Chan to this guy, Chan is 44 and still in good shape. :)

Try 51. And yes GREAT shape. i want to be like that in my 50's.

Re: Ong Bak review

I was watching the thai version with friends and all we did was crack the hell up everytime he got someone in the head with his elbow. just too hilarious to watch. but very good movie.
did anyone see the secret messages he wrote out on the walls of the set to Spielberg and Besson?

Re: Ong Bak review

That guy will be the next Jackie Chan, but not in America. But the guy can fight!! :)

Re: Ong Bak review

Luc Besson re-edited the film after he bought it. I think it's amazing. The directors follow-up is called Born To Fight. It has even more cool stunts. Be on the look out for it in 2 years.

Re: Ong Bak review

This is a definet must see if you are into martial arts flicks! The action scenes are amazing and Jaa is one bad ass. I expect to see this guy in many movies to come.

All I can say is Ooooh and Ouch! ;D I give it two kicks up!
