One shot Music Video

Robbie Comeau

Como's back. back again
I am doing a one shot music video and the camera has to be on certain talents at certain times.

What is the best way of filming this?

My idea was to go with the singer before everyone arrives, and get him to sing from point A to point B.

Put markers down, do it again, and if it lines up, it's a go. He will walk on beat so it shouldn't be a problem.

As we do the song a third time, lay down markers for where I want my talents to be..

Are there any methods for this? It'll be with a steadicam

are you saying as a dry run see if the singer is hitting his marks at the same times so you know where the talent has to be at which times?

Yea pretty much.

I made a timeline with the timing of the song and with seconds spreading apart.. and one each time marker, there is a marker for what talent I want on that spot

One trick for these long one take shots is to have a few times where the camera is passing by some object that fills the frame. That way you can break it into more shots while maintaining the illusion of being one shot. Could save you a ton of time and result in much better overall performances.

Here is what I have come up with, I want to be at certain places at certain times. How can I bring this to the shoot day? Print it off? Make an animated file in AE with a dot going across the screen representing the singer?

Basically, its a path the singer is walking down, and on each side of him are the dancers and performers. At the end of the song they all come together and it's sort of a surprise.

If you break your blocking down using the song's compositional structure you may have an easier time communicating your needs to the performers and dancers. A song I'm working on at the moment is structured: Intro- Verse 1 - Verse 2 - Chorus 1 - Figure 1 - Verse 3 - Chorus 2 - Figure 2 - Bridge - Solo - Verse 4 - Chorus - 3 - Outro. If you don' t know ask the singer to explain the structure to you. If you can tell the singer "You need to be here when you start the second verse!" everyone's job is easier.

Yeah Robbie it's just as simple as blocking the action... either on the day or if you want before hand if you can get everyone together and just go though it on your street or whatever, where you can start and stop the music to show people where they need to be... that way they can see where they need to be, and hear at what point in the song they should be there. If you can do it before, that way on the day everyone has at least a rough understanding, and then you can do a few walkthroughs at the location on the day before you start shooting so people get refreshed and better acquainted with the actual location.

One shots are just lots of orchestration and clear instruction, unfortunately there's no trick!
