One-Man Team Audio Recording?

If I don't have a second person to hold a mic over the heads of the actors, what is the next best thing to record audio as a one-man team when you don't want to resort to your on-camera (xa h1) microphone? Would it be to use a lav system with a receiver that exports to XLR into your cam (if that's even possible), or to you use a better rail-mounted mic on top of your cam?

Thanks!

the closest mic will always win :) For some situations a stationary boom can be used as well with great success, ie sit down interview. I try to avoid using lavs as the noise from clothing and such can be a hassle to deal with (but there are ways to deal with it), but for a lot of situations a wired or wireless lav is the best option. Mics mounted on top of the cam, no matter the quality, are just too far away to sound good. Thats a complete last resort that can almost always be worked around.

i ones did a documentary about one man gang local director who was shooting his movies by him self , i will always remember the beautiful sentence he was shouting to one of his non actors actress - Hey stupid ***** ,play under the mic!

do a search on the g2 kits - its cheapest you'll get buy with professionally. The only major problem is that the mic it comes with isnt the greatest. Sanken and Countryman and others make a few that will sound fantastic though.

As for concealing the mic, there are plenty of methods and places but it depends on the clothing and the mic. If you really want to hide it easily, get a countryman b6. that will do you nicely for size.

Couldn't you just hold the boom yourself, and attach the mic to a portable digital recorder & clip it to your belt/put in pocket?

Why don't u by a boom pole to C stand attachment. That way, you can do standing or sitting interviews and recording. Or, set a cheap tripod and rig up a boom attachment device. This would be more suitable for action. Then during panning shots of action or walking, you could pan the mic alongside your camera. You'd probably want a LANC controller to make it more interesting footage, but hey, it could work!
