Hi Guys
If your in a position that you could only afford one light what would it be?
Brand ...Wattage..

cheers

Eureka:huh:

Without knowing what you mostly shoot, I agree with Horse, the Arri 650 Fresnel is a great all around light.

If you said keying interviews, I would have a Kino Flo Diva 400, it is more versatile as a key source because you can use tungsten or daylight tubes but the Kinos are mainly useful for lighting people and green screen BGs. Flos have a very short throw so they are more limited than a fresnel for many applications. You can't really throw a slash of light with a Kino.

All the best,

Dan

Seriously, just one light? If you have enough grip equipment, you could accomplish decent lighting with a single source, but it would be a real challenge. Likely more expensive as well, but since you ask.

An Arri 650 is a good call, but if all I had was a single instrument, I would go with a small HMI (like a Mole 575 Solarspot). The advantage is much higher output (many times) which you will need as your will likely be flooding the output to cover both your key and fill needs (via bounce). The other advantage is the higher color temperature which allows it to be used in both tungsten and daylight situations. You loose less output warming a source (from daylight to tungsten) than when you cool a source (tungsten to daylight).

If I was mainly doing interviews, I would go for a joker 400 or 200, but we are talking thousands of dallars here and anyone who only wants to buy one light doesnt want to spend 3 grand on it when they can buy an entire arri kit for that.

For the price of one Mole 575 Solarspot, you could by an Arri kit with 3 or 4 lights. "Afford " is the key word here.

That's an incomplete question really, 'cause you didn't say how much you can afford to spend for that one light. If you can afford to get a 650 fresnel then you can actually afford a smaller 3 light kit. If you can afford to get 1 joker 200, then you can afford to get a nice Arri IV softbank kit. Try asking, what sort of lighting can I get for $xxx.

one light huh? 2k Arri Fresnl. you can bounce it every where, diffuse the hell out of it, scrim it down to a 300 watt light intensity, and it will run on a 15 amp circuit.

My guess is not at all. But perhaps Australia runs on 220v power and has 13 amp household circuits like the UK? Which would mean 2600 watts per circuit which could easily drive a 2k. So that could work out, at least for those on 220 power. Right?
Peace,

-Harry

Yes, you should be okay, but keep in mind that is quite a HEAVY LOAD on any household circuit. 2000W. So you may want to make sure that nothing else is on that circuit...like a fridge, otherwise when that compressor kicks in, the lights will go out! :)

well you kinda have to find it its own circuit. And have a good Gaffer chekc the box. worst comes to worst, use a 1k and a 650 on the circuit.

Im talking upto $1000 Australian

At that price point, buy used. Go for Mole or Arri, even used they will typically outlast most other brands purchased new.

I'd recommend the 2k as well....I have two Arrilite 2000's and I love'em! I said this in another thread, better to have more than enough that can be trimmed, then be stuck making wishes on set when you're 3 stops under.....True, they can be a bit more tricky to power up (not just finding a circuit, but also making sure you have properly rated stingers too....) but even faced with that, you can always install a 1k globe!! No one here has mentioned that yet. Most fixutres can take a range of globes. So go get a 2k, and buy a variety of globes that the fixture can take, most likey its only going to take 1k and 2k, but hey, when you only have 15 amp circuits in site....you'll be happy you spent 30 bucks on that extra 1k globe. Happy Lighting!:)

Price aside, a Mole 575 SolarSpot is gonna cream the output of any 2k tungsten source. The fact that they won't need distro like a 2k would is just an added advantage.

But really, why would you ever try to do everything with a single source. Just seems to be more work (and grip equipment) than necessary.

Well this is somewhat related but i might be shooting a short 'trailer' in awhile, and the budget is a little low - i'll only have about 200 singapore bucks to play with at max. And that includes sound, and i'm going with a senheisser 416 shotgun with rycote and boom which takes up 50 bucks leaving 150 for lighting. So far i'm thinking of getting a kino flo 4ft bank(60 bucks), a 650 fresnal(25 bucks), a reflector(8 bucks), C stand for reflector(15 bucks), softbox(25 bucks)...

Most of the scenes are going to be daylight ones, and these are basically all the locations that will be used - http://wobblin.net/2006/06/29/acsi-ib-world-school-student-council-2006/ , although there might be a few more indoor shots in the final thing. Anyone have any comments on what i should do?

exactly my thoughts. I would say buying a bunch of used and abused lowels would be the best bet. sometimes you can find amazing deals on em.

if only could rent/buy one light = 1200 watt HMI par ...

good for day & night .. interior or exterior ..enough power to light fairly large area ..
tung ( gel) or daylight balance
