I want to use an Audio_technica 4073a for my indi film that i will be making this summer. Only problem is, I will only be able to afford one. Is using one shotgun mic common for movie-making, or are there usually several shotguns that are used during the process?

That depends on how well you treat them
But seriously, most of the times, especially if you're on a low budget, you use one (shotgun) mic. If you've some cash left, buy a good hypercardoid for your interior scenes (if any).
