One 4x3 clip in a 16x9 project

I'm editing this wedding in Pro 1.5...the whole project is "squeeze mode" widescreen, expect for one small 3 second clip I accidentally shot in 4x3 mode. In the Premiere Project Window, the footage is stretched (which is actually ok in this case), but when I export the movie to an AVI file, the picture snaps to a 4x3 frame, then snaps back to a widescreen image. Is there any way to fix this or am I going to have to cut that scene out? (preferred answer is "yes, there is a way to fix this!").

yes. i dont know about fabricating the squeeze look, but to get the letterbox, simply create a title with two black boxes on the top and bottom that match the rest of the footage, and overlap it with your 4:3 footage

Thanks for the response. I think your approach would work, but I'm not willing to chop off the tops and bottoms, because the project is already a 16x9 project as it is.

I was reading something on the Adobe forum about right clicking the 4x3 clip and "interpreted the footage" as widescreen. Then when it exports, it should export as widescreen. anyways, i'm headed home now to give that a shot.

I solved the problem, and just in case anyone else has this issue, here's the solution:

apply an transform (or pretty much any effect) to the 4x3 clip in the timeline. I applied the transform effect, but made it so that it doesn't actually have any effect on the clip...then when i exported the movie, everything was 16x9. It seems like premiere just needed to have some video effect applied to the clip and everything would be fine. Otherwise, if it was just a pure, untouched 4x3 clip in the timeline, it would export as 4x3. anyways, case closed and I'm happy.

that 'solution' makes no sense to me. They is no reason for a 4x3 clip to change to widescreen if you apply an effect. You must have changed somethnig else, I would imagine.

It seems like premiere just needed to have some video effect applied to the clip and everything would be fine. Otherwise, if it was just a pure, untouched 4x3 clip in the timeline, it would export as 4x3

Then if you have a 4:3 clip and you put an effect onto it, it will export as 16:9?

Reflex,

Tell me about it. It's weird. I'm only reporting what happened...if I have time later, I'll post the before and after clips to show you what it looks like.

Is your "recompress" box checked in export settings? If not, you would have to make a small change to your 4:3 frame to get Adobe to look at it. Perhaps this is what the transform is doing...flagging PP to recompress your 4:3 frames to 16:9?
