Once We Were Warriors

Wow, watched this movie again last night. What a powerful movie. A complete contrast to "Whale Rider" but a similar theme in there.

I've been to New Zealand, north and south island, but I missed the industrial and run down sections. Got a small taste of it in Auckland, but nothing along the lines of that in the movie.

Still, it's an amazing country.

Alot of my friends are Samoans. Yes, don't piss them off.

Re: Once We Were Warriors

I saw this movie a little while back. I liked it. It was pretty damn intense. I wanted to strangle Jango Fett the whole movie (of course, he would kick my ass). The mom's story was pretty touching.

Re: Once We Were Warriors

When I was younger, I got into a fight with a mob of Samoans. Actually, they jumped my friend and I and all we could do was try to survive. In the flurry of fists and huge bodies, I managed to grab a bat so that we could escape.

They are truly impervious to pain, and absolutely fearless.

Remember that line in Fight Club about how people avoid physical confrontations? Not Polynesians - in my experience, they look for it ;D

Re: Once We Were Warriors

Intense film, and Temuera Morrison had to apparently seriously bulk up for the role of Jake the Muss.

IMO, most polynesians I know personally, go out of their way to avoid confrontation but once they snap, it's on like Donkey Kong.
