Onboard LCD Monitor

I have and use (always) the Panasonic 7" LCD. I find it extremely useful for framing. Not for focusing or anything like that, but with a shoe mounted LCD you can use it for composition and seeing things in widescreen without squeeze. And of course playback:

lyons den, is it pretty stable being only on the hot shoe mount? also how does it power? ie, battery, plug in, etc? looks pretty good!

Hi Rene,

Not for focusing or anything like that, ...

How do you focus then? It definitely looks greater in size than the 3.5LCD...
Am i the only one who focuses by the 3.5 LCD ? I wouldn't be able to cary a tv out to many locations... How do you guys do it?

Also that 7 inch LCD looks beautiful on your cam!

ttt, I use one of two mounts depending on the shot. I bought a swivel-head ball mount through Rush at EVS and I also have a very sturdy silver (one position) mount which you can see in that pic above. At some really extreme angles sometimes the ball head doesnt always hold perfectly, but that is very rare.

the powering system is kinda unique. I have a Bescor battery pack that I use to run the LCD only, instead of using the camera battery's juice. It's a modified cigarette lighter version of the (I believe) VTR add-on cables for the LCD.

Here's some more pics, useful even perhaps!

I can take a pic of just the cables and stuff if you guys think you might be interested...

dmitriandsnow, I focus with the camera's LCD using the EVF focus assist. There's no other way personally for me. Once I get it focused then I use the 7" LCD to set up the shot and whatnot...I too don't have enough crew or resources to have a laptop or field monitor sitting next to me. So for me the 7" widescreen LCD works best.

awwww yeah! the wheel chair cam! how did that footage come out? did you clamp it to the chair or go handheld? i love the little diagram of the path direction! that rules... especially your 'mini crew image' on the path direction!

regarding the monitor, nice... now you made me want one damn it. the 7" screen looks pretty appealing. at least for tripod stationary use. it does 4.3 and widescreen right? where does it plug in? nice!

One more question, how do you balance all your stuff with other hot shoe mountable hardware? I mean , you probably use a lav, a shotgun, plus maybe your lcd, etc? thanks for the info on the monitor, I will look into it.

One more:

Does the built in speaker help with checking for clipping, audio, etc?

ttt, plugs into the yellow RCA input, next to the firewire input. and yes does 4x3 and 16x9. i did it handheld, actually have done it handheld all three times ive tried this "poor man's dolly" technique. he he. i did it once in BOGO but it didn't make it into the dvxfest's cut, it'll be in the Director's cut though...

ReneH, actually the most stuff I have on the camera itself at one time is usually just the 7"LCD and rarely a shotgun (its usually on the boom pole, unless i am by myself which luckily hasn't happened much lately), but that has its own mic mount as you all know, so it doesn't get in the way. and actually i never have used the LCD's built-in mic.

hope this helps!
