onboard camera light for indoors?

Is the Frezzi HMI 24 w light a good choice for indoors as well as outdoors? I'm shooting documentary style, solo, and can't set up lights.

I'm trying to prevent exposure blowouts indoors - the sunlight windows get blown out. will this light help?

In a lot of the shots I can't change the composition and must include a sunlit window.

That's a great light. If you need to balance indoors w/out daylight coming in, an "indoor" filter to convert 5600K (daylight ) to 3600K (tungsten) would help. Should be available as an accessory. They make flip up filters that are easy to use on-the-fly.

The onboard light/sungun is really intended for lighting up a limited space and adding fill to a subject. Avoiding blown-out windows would require much more lighting than an onboard light. And even when you have more lights, it’s still good to ND the windows. Perfect world, I know.

If more lighting is not an option, then you may have to live with some hot windows. Try your best to shoot around it and use the daylight to your advantage. Your frezzi HMI can be used as a nice fill and or key for talking heads, w/natural daylight balancing out the background.

Thanks for the response, marin415ca & phd.

What does it mean to use an onboard light to "key for talking heads?"

I'm glad to hear that you can use the frezzi light for both indoors and outdoors, at least with a filter. I thought separate onboard lights would be required for outdoors and indoors, which would be a drag.

I looked up the Pagligt at the attached website but they do not mention the U.S. as a country they deliver to. I'll have to contact them.

What kind of criteria do I use to chose between lights?

It's too bad that there is no real way to get rid of blown out windows without additional lighting.

A good friend of mine is in Sweden right now. She is a glass artist and teaches at a glass school there.

Thanks for letting me know where to get the pag light. How do I chose between the paglight and the Frezzi HMI 24W light?

Well if you like the PAG series, you can get an HMI capsule for a higher pag version. You can email me for more info on that if you like. If you prefer the Frezzi, or you find that it is at a better price range, you can't go wrong with that either. they are both excellent quality lights, with top quality manufacturing.

It is always better to have more daylight power than less tungsten power; This is because it costs less Wattage to add an orange filter to change day to indoor, than adding a dichroic filter to change indoor to day.

Also, HMI's are so efficient, they use 90% of their energy as light rather than heat. So the 24W actually outputs something like 100W, but consumes only 24W of energy. That is due to the nature of the efficient medium-arc iodide bulb. Very expensive, but worth every penny :) Once you go HMI/Fluorescent, you never go back... 6x more efficient and no heat... Batteries last forever.

Thanks for the information. I've saved this thread so when I have the money to buy a light I'll know where to look.
I just bought a pc laptop to edit (I plan to use Vegas) so I'm out of dough for the moment.

Cool, you're welcome! By the way I just became a Vegas dealer, and I am matching B&H and giving free shipping for DVXusers in the U.S.

Vegas Dealer

I gather that you mean evsonline is a Vegas dealer?
I figured I would just purchase it on line, I thought I was dealing with Vegas directly, but maybe not. How does this work?
I cancelled the Dell laptop order. It turned out the laptop will not run a second monitor (dual dock.)
I have to rethink the whole computer thing.
Will Mac do a decent job running Vegas if I get the Mac/Windows platform software?
Or I may just get my old dell desktop retrofitted with the DVI and firewire setup it needs.
Any advice would be appreciated.
