"On The Lot" tonight

the reason i say zack is because it just seems like Carrie has been rooting for him since day 1 and i hate the fact that the judges seem to follow her lead even when she struggles for about 30 seconds to get her freaking responses out, lol.

"well.....your short....um....i thought it was....um...how can i say this....err....i just thought it was um....let me see....uh, just not good. um...yea thats what i wanted to say. not good."

that sunshine short zack did was kind of empty to me, it was cool, but i agree with the bad acting in it. notice he hasnt done anything that requires dialogue. it seems like his shorts are just concepts or ideas rather than characters that mean anything to anybody. but he's had a beginning, middle and end which seems to be all they are looking for.

i like the indian girl's stuff too i jus think they have a hard on for zack.

I think Zack's was the best, but I still felt that overall these were weak films... I was not very entertained... "How to have a girl" was AWFUL.

Agreed, how to have a girl was terrible.

As for Zack, I wouldn't say it's him and everyone fighting for second. He is very good and one of my favorites, but I also have liked Jason and Sam as well.

My Rank for this week:
really good
1) Die Hardly Working
pretty good
2) the proctologist doctor one
good
3) the brain surgery one
ok
4) robbing the sperm bank
bad
5) How to Have a Girl

after watching the movies on the website, my order would be the same. the first three were clearly better than the others. you forgot to include "discovering the wheels", but that one wasn't all that great anyways.

Well, I'm ready to give the Indian girl a second chance because her short this week was great. Zack's still took the cake though. I agree it was a gimmick film, but I believe when you have 5 minutes or less, your options are kind of limited to "gimmicky" ideas that don't need a lot of time for setup and fleshing out the characters (especially when it's only 2 minutes).

Brandon, I think you're being unusually harsh on these films. It seems like these guys are given (assuming they're shooting on day 2 and editing for days 3, 4, and 5) 1 day to come up with an idea and write it. Give me a break. Like anybody here is going to write something amazing in one day. That being said, there was one disaster this week. And that was "How To Have A Girl". All the others were well made considering the time constraints, however (although Will's was a little weird). And I agree that The Sperm Bank one was overly-lauded. It was pretty much average.

I continue to be impressed by these filmmaker's films in such tough time constraints. I want someone to rise up to the occassion and challenge Zack because I'm sick of that permanent smile on his face.

it's my theory that they had much longer to make these films. remember, the last three episodes have just been films that were made before they were officially selected for the show. that means they haven't shown any new content for the past month. i seriously doubt the contestants have just been sitting around their hotel rooms doing nothing. i wouldn't be at all surprised if they've had weeks to plan these things out.

c.g. yeah i think you have a good point in terms of handicapping the CONTEST, he is def a front runner if not the front runner. And I know that all shorts have a punchline or gimmic (believe me I know :). But i think there are glimpses of depth some of the other shorts that might sustain a feature.

heheh - I think this is the first serious post I've seen from you on here :)

Revised Rank:

My Rank for this week:
really good
1) Die Hardly Working
pretty good
2) the proctologist doctor one
good
3) the brain surgery one
ok
4) robbing the sperm bank
bad
5) the Mustang Cavemen one
6) How to Have a Girl

so when the show first comes on and it introduces Zack, and he does that "whirly thing" with his hands - is that his trademark now? :) i've seen him do it a few times when he's not on stage.

i wonder what opportunities can come to these filmmakers even if they don't win?

Die Hardly working was the funniest. True, Zack's films have lacked substantial depth, but his work with the actors in this one is what sold the film. I don't know why Carrie didn't find the brain doctor short funny, maybe I just have a sick sense of humor.

How to make a girl just hurt in every department, and the sperm bank started out good but fell flat at the end. Is it me, or did the wheel short seem more like a Ford Mustang commercial than a movie?

yea the black dude from the surgery room was the cop in die hard QUOTE]

And don't forget, carl winslow from family matters!

I believe that Carrie actually liked the brain one somewhat. It was the guest director that hated it.

Yes, the caveman bit seemed like a commercial. I totally agree.

I'm glad someone brought this up. Everytime I see Zack do that, I roll my eyes. I really find it annoying. That and his constant, goofy grinning.

As for his films, I'm really not that impressed. His films depend on effects and gimmicks. So, what I would like to see him do is a film that has absolutely none of that. Until that time comes, he'll just be overrated.

Just curious - did anyone lose the satellite feed last night? We did not get to see the Sperm Bank film. From what I am reading, it must have been a local issue.

Jack - loved your comments on making film. I have saved them off and will print them out so I can study them further with camera in hand. Loved Shed by the way!!!

Zach's films have been my favorite to date. I think the brain film was a risk. In our household, it resulted in a split decision. I found the film distasteful while my other half, who is more cynical, sort of liked it.

Thank goodness they did away with those cliff hanger eliminations. Give the contestants some dignity. This episode was much nicer than previous shows where the negativity of elimination hanged over the entire broadcast.

I think On the Lot has found it's stride, after a rocky start. :)

Carl Winslow was in another short a few weeks back, no? About a guy who kills girls near train tracks?

Apologies if this has been covered, this thread is getting way to big to research!

I also saw Stuart Pankin from "Not Necessarily the News" and "Hollywood Knights" a while ago.

My review of this week's show.....if it wasn't for DVR, there would be no review at all. Spending more time fast-forwarding than watching. Even the skimpy purple dress can't hold my attention. (What the hell was that all about?)

hey we talked about that on pages 4, 7, 28 and page 34 dude no duplicate posts! :)

the only thing the host has going for her IS her dress.

i cant imagine watching this thing without DVR......i probably wouldnt watch it if i didnt have DVR matter of fact.

Ha ha ha ha, peeking at this thread is the only thing getting me thru a painfully boring edit!
My brain is ready to shut down.

Wow, that dress was a little north of the knee, if you know what I'm saying.
