"On The Lot" tonight

i mean its possible there was a korean film written shot and edited in 10 days and won big at cannes like a year or two ago. was it" 3-iron" maybe, not sure.

probably a little quicker to shoot when your main character doesn't say anything the entire movie. :)

it's very difficult to be a filmmaker when one has to work a regular job to pay the bills ...
and there's always a way ... shoot weekends , take 5 days off work ( shoot during vacation time) , in LA it's easy to get a crew ( run a ad ) ...
for any project one has to find a way/means to do it ...

i'm a semi retired commercial DP... here & there i'll shoot on friends projects ...i've shot features that were one weekend here and there over 6 months to 2 years ... i have no plans to make my own feature ... only doing little projects on the grand children ....

are these persons "on the lot" getting paid ?
 
I think there is mass confusion here. Yes, the films werent great, last week there were 3 very good films (and yes you haters, the doc was very good). This week, one good one but... these are SUBMISSION films. They were contacted and told they would have 5 days to conceive, write, direct, secure locations, gear, edit, score, foley, etc. I think there was a producer from FOX with them to make sure it was on the up and up but they were given NO RESOURCES WHATSOEVER. They had to get the gear, get locations, etc. etc. etc. They had no help from anyone.

My issue with the harsh criticism here is that even the worse films on this show are as good or better than most things posted on this and other productions sites. Everyone thinks they can be a director, all they need is the money or the break, etc. If you have true talent, you can create an impressive short without money or a break.

The judges are frustrating. What was up with last night? They didn't like some of the better ones and loved the slut mom one, which IMO sucked. Go figure.

Oh, I agree absolutely. When I'm ready to go and do mine, then that's what will happen. I'm writing one now with a very specific plan on how to make it, though there's no deadline on it so I'm taking my time with writing on it.

This show is terrible. I like the concept, but the execution is TERRIBLE. I quit watching. The revolving judges messes things up. The revolving hosts shows there's problems behind the scenes. Carrie Fisher is offended by anything and everything, and does not seem to be in touch with reality. Why is a washed up actress from the 70's with no talent, who's better know for her drug and alcohol use judging kids with skills much better than hers?

The only judge on there that seemed in touch with reality was Brett Ratner.
 
We should be feeling sorry for the contestants. They have to know by now that this show is headed for cancellation and that everyone is just going through the motion week after week. For those people who said that this was going to be their big break, I wonder what they must be feeling now. Probably worse to be on the show at this point than to get eliminated; at least those people can start building their film careers in a direction that matters.

I watched the Top Chef season premiere tonight and realized what a superior show it is. On the Lot came so close too.
 
oh for sure. I had a really great lav mic kit & an MKH415 but they all got stolen right before christmas. i'd love to replace them, but the insurance company stopped returning my calls

I didnt care for the first one. The second was well shot and had tack sharp focus (rare with indie stuff) but be careful about using the shutter to control light, it kills the film look motion blur.

I don't get it, I thought the point of getting on the show was that you would have the studio holding your hand along the way. If the contestants were just going to make whatever they could on their own with their own equipment and their own hard work then why get on the show? Why not stay at home and make their own films without all the hassle? What's the show doing exactly other than documenting what they've been doing (oops, not even that is being done right, if at all)?

I agree that the judges are falling apart with each episode. Michael Bay actually was really good as a judge, he didn't BS anybody and, if they sucked, he straight up told them and for the right reasons.

BTW, what are Kenny and Marty still doing on the show? As far as I can tell, they're not following the rules at all and just doing their own thing, which is fine anywhere else but a contest like this where they have to show they can be trusted with a $1 million studio deal. Don't get me wrong, Marty has the most talent visually but the dude keeps making trailers!!! On top of that, I like the guy's work overall but he came off like a real "so-and-so" this past episode and it wasn't just in the way he said things, you could see he actually believed his ridiculousness. Kenny on the other hand... he's somewhere else, that music video was deep but totally wrong for the show.

As far as my favorite film so far, it would have to be either the cupid one (even though it tried to be a little bit of everything) or "Polished". That's "so far" because, I don't know why they've switched the game up in the middle of the show's run, but that's all I can keep track of since they're not showing everybody's films, just a few at a time? I guess if you add it up it will get people voted off more frequently versus dragging the series out all summer like originally planned.

Really, if they just give it another chance after working out all the quirks of this first season and get a formula, then I think people would be more interested than they are now.

1. Get some really good filmmakers.

2. Get better judges and host. (The guest judge aspect is fine)

3. Help the filmmakers out! If they're going to use a $1 million budget, give them some help to show what they could do with a higher budget!

4. Show what they're doing/what challenges they face/who they're working with (the actors and crew could use some free publicity too)

5. If they're going to let the directors use their own stuff, then at least have the resources for other contestants to compete if need be. Sure the time stop technique wowed everyone, but what if some of the other contestants lack the know-how or money to buy the software to do so? Granted, in the real world of filmmaking, the person with the most knowledge/toys comes out ahead but in a contest setting it just doesn't seem fair if everyone has to use sticks when the one guy has a gun.


I guess after all that all I've gotta say is... can't wait for the next episode!:laugh:
 
if they last another two weeks, theyll be even more screwed because they will have to change the format once again (they dont have these movies the contestants already made lying in the vault). But I believe the idea is to eventually get them Hollywood-type help and see what they can do.
 
the concept of hte show started off great but after episode 2 it ran into the ground, i'd like to know what happend????

Yea the Indian girl's work was lovely... She did the doc on the comedian and she truly had the best photography among all the others.
