"On The Lot" tonight

i watched tonight and will probably continue to watch, but tonights episode also confirmed exactly why i would never want to be on a reality show even if the subject matter is right up my alley

When I saw the one guy with the big hair start shooting handheld in the train yard I felt the pain of whoever had to edit that later.

I think I would be really stressed out on that show and end up looking like a fool, so I'll just sit back with a beer and critique from my couch.

the 24hr challenge is a great idea. I just faciliated a workshop in Dublin that brought teenagers from Ireland, Finland, Bosnia, Italy and Germany together for a week to make media. It culminated in a 24 hr film challenge with mixed country groups and the operating language of English. What I lived through last week was 10 times more interesting that what Fox put together. I suppose just from a cross culture perspective. Our group were amateurs and only a handful with any camera experience. but you can check out what they made. Each group was given an object, word and color to work into their 3 min piece. They used imovie to put it all together.

What I thought was kinda funny / agrivating was the two girls were carrying this huge car seat next to the guy with the hair...and they're like...can we put this down? while the guy like jumps away and is like..OH YEAHHH THIS SHOT WOULD BE SUPER SWEET LONG SIDE WALKING. Then they ask where to put it...and the guy said..right where it was before.

After I saw that...I had to get up for a good 30 seconds because I was just thinking to myself...wow what an idiot..

drama sells commercials -u need to have drama or u dont have a reality show. happy to see the dvx being whored like this :D

so far the show seems interesting, i'll keep watching :D the guy at the end directing gonzo is so funny :D "u guys are proffs u know what to do" lol

Screw the art... it's entertaining IMO. I'm soooo glad that guy who wore the sunglasses got the boot. I can't stand dir's like him.

Eh, show was alright, made me feel stupid though, I thought theyd be above special since they were picked out of 12000.

OH MY! This was sad... first the pitches... wow... and then, the EGOS! OH THE EGOS! LOL! :) Entertaining, yes! Next big director? Probably not.

It's a TV show first and a talent search 2nd. Casting for a reality show isn't fundamentally different than casting for something scripted. You look for the personalities/characeters you need and pick them. Someone is the underdog, someone is the b*tch, someone is the jerk, etc.,. and the contestants are pretty much stuck w/those "roles" regardless of how they actually act. I know editors that refuse to do reality because of how manipulative it can be.

And, I agree that the episode was painful to watch and I doubt I'll catch another one.

I'm just dreading the premiere episode with all the short films. Chances are 90% of them will be unwatchable and I hate to sit through two hours just to catch the decent ones.

Only caught the last ten minutes last night - I dont know if I can make myself watch anymore. May have to watch the shorts though - kinda like watching Cops or Springer to make you feel better about yourself.

My guess is that most of the directors on that show are probably very talented and pretty cool. However, it seems to be the goal of every reality tv show to focus on the few lunatics and to turn every minor conflict into major drama.

well the certainly focused more on the drama.....they showed way more many bad pitches than good ones, and focused on the ego maniacs during the 24 hour short production.

I thought the show was awesome. Yes they pumped up the drama, but that didn't bother me. That's reality TV. I always see posts in the Director forum where people are talking about clashes with their DP, crew and others. I like reading those threads. Now I get to actually see it happening.

I feel like an insider since I've made a few bad shorts and I know some of the big no no's. When I see the cast doing bad hand held shots or filming while the train is passing in the background (good luck with that audio), I know the trouble that is ahead. I'm just having fun watching. I'm not expecting to see a talent show.

When are they airing that?

I would actually love to catch that show and record it. That way I can just fast-forward through the really bad stuff.
