I had previously asked on the forum if the hvx supports those on the fly hard drives u can dump info onto, and the answer was yes. I was wondering if anybody has used one and what brands work well? rogar-Evil(DBG):
for dumping from P2 -> HardDrive, any Fire Wire drive works, well almost any. Just don't get any of those 'bus-powered' FW drives. those are the kind that don't need an AC adapter, they get their power from the FW connection. The HVX doesn't support that.
ok, actually the on-the-fly hard drive's im interested in. Which i guess are battery powered. something which u could take along on a shoot to dump the p2 card onto and continue shooting. I'm asking because im looking for a cheaper alternative to a firestore or cineporter.
If you are talking transfer and storage. Look into the g-tech mini. 100gb with bus power. works great. I also use a 20gig firewire IPOD for transfer. Solid.
I have one of those Lacie 100 gb mini hard drives. It has usb, fw and a power port that you plug into another usb slot. It works "bus powered" on a mac when using firewire, but when using usb, you have to plug it into two usb ports, one for data, the other for power. Now I am getting a TV engineer freind to rig the usb cable to a 7.2 volt sony mini dv camera battery. I happen to have like 6 of them, the M series I think. So, in theory(we tested the drive with a power supply set to 7.2 volts) I will be able to dump my p2 data onto this, or any other lacie portable drive when this thing is rigged up. We took an old busted sony mini dv (it fell off my beach cruiser when a dog was chasing me, really) and cut up the back and will use that for the battery plate. It will actually be pretty nice when it is done as I have fabricated an alluminum holder for the battery mount with a "box" to hold the drive. I'm even going to powder coat it. It should be done in a couple of weeks and I will post pics.
One more thing, does anyone (Barry,Jarred) Know where I can get a panasonic battery plate? If this thing works, I want to do it with panasonic batteries. Thanks!
