ON-Set Emergency! -- Follow Focus Install Help Needed

Dear all,

I'm a longtime reader and first-time poster, and hope that someone can help me out pronto, as we are shooting today using our new DVX100B Main camera. Problem encountered is this:

We bought the Cinetech FFSL01 Follow Focus system for our main camera, and bought the LG02 (03?) Focus ring gear to go with it from Rush at EVS, who is likely asleep on the West Coast or I would have called him for help.

We cannot for the life of us figure out how to get the focus ring gear onto the lens assembly. Do we have to remove the manual focus ring somehow, or does the focus ring simply tension-fit around the manual ring? We hesitate to force it around there so that we don't damage our new camera, but is this the only way to get it on?

HELP PLEASE!!

Best regards to Barry and all forum members,
Adam

I have the Chrosziel "slip-on" ring for the DVX100a and yeah, I had to just squeeze it around there and then use the set screws. It wasn't easy to get on straight, that's for sure.

I just think you need to use a little more force, if it's anything like the one I bought...

Is DVX100B manual focus ring bigger than DVX100A?

Thanks so much, wells for your quick reply. We tried applying more force with no luck, and I'm beginning to wonder if the manual focus ring for the DVX100B we are using is larger than the ring on the DVX100A that the ring was made for. Cinetech is not answering their phones today and EVS could not advise as Rush is out of the office, so we remain stuck without the ability to pull focus on our shoot.

Can anyone confirm that the manual focus ring on the DVX100B is the same exact size as the DVX100A or not?

Many thanks,
Adam

Hello Adam, I am sorry but I am out today, otherwise I would have called Cinetech myself. I will do so as soon as I get in tomorrow, I wish there was more I could do. :undecided

Guess it's too late now. But if not, just a suggestion that may or may not work, as I'm not familiar with that follow focus system.

There was a DIY FF system recently that instead of relying on a toothed gear and gear ring around the camera focus ring, used a rubber like wheel which was held against the focus ring and relied on friction to turn the focus ring. Maybe you can find one or two thick elastic bands to go round the toothed gear and fix it tight enough against the focus ring to do the job for now? A long shot I know!:undecided

Wow, Eric, that is a good idea, I never thought of that. I will make sure to remember that.

Adam's question still stands, though... I would assume the focus ring is identical on the 100 A and B, as the lens hasn't been modified, but I would be very interested in confirming that, because I have a Century Optics FF ring that I'd like to reuse on my future 100B.

Rush, could you please...?

Tks a lot in advance.

I will confirm tomorrow. Carl from Cinetech is coming to measure the 100B's ring, and give a verdict.

Carl was just here, and we fit the focus gear from the 100A on the 100B. It was a bit tighter, but not due to a change in size, but primarily due to some kind of tougher rubber being used on the 100B. It requires a bit more force, but I did it twice in the lobby, no problem. However, I am having cinetech make a new slightly looser ring, 5/1000-th looser, just in case someone wants it that way. But in RE to tinselburg, you should be fine, the ring is tight but it fits. Make sure you swing it in all the way behind the focus dial first, then pull it tight towards you.

Thanks Rush ! Good news !

As my Century Optics ring is in two parts and you can adjust the tightness via the screws, I guess it won't be a problem either.
