on-set effects

Hey. I'm looking for either a book, video, link, some type of source that teaches me about on-set effects. What I mean by that is effects that are not edited in. I want the artsy, innovative stuff that you can do on camera. I'm interested in topics such as using models and wide angle lenses and lighting effects. I hope you get the gest of it. Here's an example. Recently, I watched the movie Brazil and apparently, Gilliam made a whole city with moving cars and everything from a model. I want to know how to do stuff like that.

Thanks,
Adam

I cant recommend any books etc, but a really great film to study is Fritz Lang's "Metropolis". The models and tricks they used were so well executed, you'd have no idea it was made in the 20's. He appropriately creates a hyper-advanced city using hyper-advanced techniques.

there is a chapter on figuring out the focal length to match hanging foreground miniatures to a background plate(and an xl spreadhseet with the formula in it on the enclosed DVD.) in this awesome book.
