On creating separate voices

I'm interested to know how people go about the process of creating different (and separate) voices for their characters.

Make them from a different country with an accent, a different region from the States (southerners have a drawl), don't use contractions (i.e. Clarice from "Silence of the Lambs"), have them speak Slang, bad English, proper English, Vulcan, technical terminology, references to television and movies, catch phrases, catch words, etc, etc, etc,

Be aware of the voices around you at the grocery store, school, church and you'll be amazed at the resources available to you in creating a voice for your character.

I don't think it's about dialects or accents or slang. It's about having well defined. If you really know the character's backgrounds and motivations, the voice will come naturally.

I think it's BS and leave it to the actors. There's nothing worse than reading a script with phony accents written in.
