on camera soft box

I want to purchase a soft box that mounts on my camera and is not bulky since I'll be travelling with it. Any suggestions, and is there a store in Toronto that anyone knows of where I might make the purchase? Thanks -- I'm probably the greenest newbie on the board.

Re: on camera soft box

Hi Patricia and welcome to DVXUser.  Both Chimera and Photoflex make softboxes for on-camera lights.  Are you looking for a light and a softbox or do you need to fit something to a light you already have?  The Photoflex Action Light ENG is adapatable to different lights and the Chimera Micro Softbox is bought as a kit for particular lights.

I suppose Vistek would be happy to overcharge you if they have it in stock :-).

Re: on camera soft box

Thanks Barry,
I am looking for both a light and a softbox. I'll check out BH. I've been reading the forums for a while now, and am looking forward to all that I can learn. I've already learned so much from everyone's generosity. Thanks again.

Re: on camera soft box

Barry, that looks like a good system for me -- small enough and with diffuser. I may go have a look at Vistek to see if they have it so that I can physically handle it before I order it from the link you gave me. I wasn't looking forward to having to purchase another camera!

Also take a look at the Litepanels. (www.litepanels.com)

Not a softbox, but a small, daylight balannced LED soft light that can mount to the hot shoe of the DVX. Battery powered or AC.

Dimmable with no change in color temp. They're pricey, but very handy.

80 footcandles at 2 feet, 18 fc at 4 ft., 10 fc at 6 ft., 6 fc at 8 ft.

Here's another crazy idea - Kino Flo Minis (9" bulb) with hotshoe adapter. Nice and soft. also very cool so ya won't give anyone a sunburn if you're on top of them. Of course the disadvantage is Kinos are quite pricey.

Re: on camera soft box

This isn't exactly ideal for camera mounting, but I remember an old cinematographer's book where he described these soft boxes he built.

The body of the box was a knock-down file folder box with a pull off lid. He'd line the inside with tinfoil, pop two holes in the back, mount a couple of porcelain sockets on a short 2x4, and then mount the 2x4 to the box with the sockets inside the box. He then cut a window in the box's lid and taped in a piece of 216.

A baby nail-on attached to the 2x4 made the whole contraption mountable.

Using 2 250 photofloods, you’ve got a 500 watt softlight constructed for about 30 bucks.

It sounded kinda cool, but I never tried it.
