On Camera Shotgun Mic

I'm about to buy a shotgun microphone for my Panasonic AG-DVC30 and I will be attaching it to my camera because I do not own a boom pole. What I'm wondering is, will the mic be in the camera frame if it more than 12 inches or so? And if it is, is there any way to get it out of the shot BESIDES hooking it onto a boom pole?

Chances are with your first shotgun....no, it wont be in the frame! If it were to be in the frame, you can always buy an adapter mount for your camera shoe and raise the mic! Do a search at 'B and H' for 'camera mic mounts' Eventually you'll learn to use your shotgun in other applications. Try to get one of the shockmounts!

heheheh.....is this how the audio man and the cameraman anathema for each other gets started?

Based on my past experience with this camera, the mic will be in the frame. I suggest different mounting options that raise the mic higher off-camera, OR get a short shotgun mic.

best,
-Greg

Test any shotgun out on your camera first. I found my Senn 416 picks up too much camera noise, even shock-mounted, making camera mounting unsatisfactory to me.

Ok, well would it be THAT BAD if i attached the mic to a wodden pole. I mean its not that hard to make the grooves to make mount screw onto it because I have tools to do that.

Depends on the microphone but in my experience the handling noise will be a real problem unless you have a shockmount (cable slamming into pole etc.).

On my adapter rides my 4073 shotgun in suspension, avalon 10' pole. lowell pro light, dvx on a 100mm bowl mount adapter, and Sager laptop with DvRack. Oh....and it rolls like a dream on 3'' Avenger wheels!

Like I said in the beginning of your thread, buy an adapter to raise your mike if you find it in your frame, and dont be afraid of different applications...I can set-up 10 different ways with these pieces!

So that is like an all-in-one ENG dolly? Mic stand, key light, monitor, mixer, and laptop (for offloading P2 cards? recording audio?). Whatever it is I would like to see more picture of it and details of the functios...you have me facinated bwest.

Those castor wheels look pretty noisy, how do you lock it down?

Cheers

hey wabbit,
Extremely stable and supprisingly quiet, at least on this floor, Avenger makes good stuff. Wheels are softer rubber, with smooth hubs. I'm in material handling as my day job, have been my whole life, and I know good wheels when I see them! And the wheels lock...good quality locks! As far as applications go...youve already mentioned two...but I think the stability and wheels are a huge + The other interesting feature, that worked out better than expected, was I cannibalized a karioke stand and attached it with super clamps at the base....its fully adjustable, tilts tip and spins and hugs the laptop and/or anything else i put in there. Missing are the sunhoods for lappy and battery platform at the base, which rest on the fold up legs. I didnt use cause it would hide the wheels for this photo. the base support a full size agm battery and inverter for power. hehe

Brilliant!! The only thing missing is a Segway to drive it around.

Very nice work bwest.

Cheers
