On camera monitor or no!

I am accustomed to working with a heavy camera on a tripod with a 9" external monitor. Now I have a Sony X70 which will allow me to be mobile. I have it mounted to a shoulder rig but I am not comfortable with the dinky monitor.

Am I alone or do some of you use an external monitor on your shoulder rig?

I had a 5.6" monitor hanging off a friction arm for a while, but when shoulder-shooting outdoors I would have to put the sunhood on it and it got to be very cumbersome and annoying to have my entire face stuck in it. I've since moved to an EVF. It is much lighter and because I have a mount specifically for the EVF, it has better adjustability. But that is just how I like to shoot. Really, it depends on you as a camera op, your preference, and if your setup allows.

I'm then guessing you are used to using an EVF and I still feel that is the best route for daylight exterior work, although sunlight viewable monitors are getting better to being usable. Also if you've been shooting that long, good chance your eyes can't focus on a monitor 6" from your face (ahhhh youth)! if the onboard monitor is more for a director or others to be able to view the image while you are shooting, I would think that it would be best slung at the rear of the camera--small cameras need all the back weight they can get to become shoulder-friendly, and a large monitor coming off the side or perched high will really mess up the handheld ergonomics. I personally would have it vertically inline with the body of the camera, facing off the back with the ability to be quickly flipped up to access the battery, assuming you are using an outboard battery.
