on-camera mic for ambient sound/backup

I currently have an AT-897 and I like it. However I would like to add another mic to my arsenal. I'd like something much less directional that could be mounted on-camera to pick up some ambient sound when booming with the AT, and also for any little pick-up shots where I need some ambience. Just a notch or two above the crappy built-in mics.

I see plenty of used handheld EV's on Ebay for cheap. What I remember of these things is that they are very immune to handling noise (since they're meant for handheld stand-up use), and some have decent wind protection built-in. My only concern is that they are all dynamic mics. Does the dvx's preamp have enough "oomph" to get a little bit of pull out of a dynamic mic?

Any recommendations? I'd rather go good and used rather than marginal and new.

Thanks!

this mike comming in 2 vertion s ( 3 if you are counting the mk-4s with cmc5 or 6)the preformers are exacly the same for all of them
the ccm comes with cable or with lemo connector , if we are talking the cable vertion - you just cut the cable 15 inch bellow and make it suitble for camera or boom work- the existing cable lenght is 5 miters ( 15 fit)
the mike is extrimly small and light so you can place it on every flexi arm in adistance from your zoom
the  internal low cut filter is working exellent for outside pick ups when you have wind rumble  or while taking the dyalog when you usially cut the mike around 80hz any way , if you fil that the low end is not enouth you can alwais boost in the editting

that mike suffer less from humidity then mk with cmc becouse this is not interchangeble capsul mice

another good thing with that one is that you can use it while you shooting inside the cur , very light , can sit over the sun shade above the actor head or on the deshboard , for 2 people talking on the front sit or the back sit it might be the best solution

the mike run from 12 to 48 v ph power

Dude, I would totally NOT use that mic on the camera. Those mics are so sensitive, they'll pick up any bit of camera noise, like zooming and movement. If you want a wider mic to put on the camera, maybe think about an MKH50. That mic is really sensitive too, though.

Re: on-camera mic for ambient sound/backup

i have recorded a lot of live shows and what i wound up doing was to use my wireless plugged directly into the sound board and the me-66 on the camera but pointed at the crowd!

i've found that if you use JUST the soundtrack off the soundboard its too sterile i.e. nothing but the band, sound like you got it off of their studio album.

what i do is mix like 80% soundboard clean and 20% crowd noise.

if i had a second channel for the wireless i'd probably put the mic somewhere else.

dude , if you reed what isad about placing the mike on flexible arm or even om the sunshade , i guss you might pick up les camera noice then with every other that sits dyrectly
tthe shoeps is sencitive the same as other mikes , espessially the 50 , so no one think that you can place it with out suspention , that in the case of cccm is extrimly small becouse the mike weight 40 gr
dave i am recording with ccms and cmc dyrectly to the dvx some times when the camera moovement become a problem to go with aboom and wierless placment is umpossible
this is working .
last year i did a feature , 2 dvx double system , that both cameras used schoepses to record what i couldnt do with aboom and wierless ( i had 5 lectro in my bag )
so metimes camera mike become to b e your best friend

Re: on-camera mic for ambient sound/backup

Hey, when you guys are done beating each other's mics up, can you give me a bit of feedback on my Q about dynamic mics on the dvx? :)

Re: on-camera mic for ambient sound/backup

you can place whatever you like - even the ev :-)
