on camera mic ? (Canon XHA1 )

Need some advice. Doing a short film, I start shooting tomorrow (Monday). I want to use an on-camera mic even though I do have a boompole and Rode NTG2 shotgun mic. The reason is because of spacial constraints (narrow small wooden pedestrian bridge), outdoor shoot, weather, need to shoot fast if possible.

I designed my shots so dialog shots are within a few feet of the actor-- waist up close ups, close ups, extreme closeup; just a few shots wide that I will get on location ADR to have proper sound quality.

Will the audio be good quality by using the Canon XHA1 on camera microphone? Should I mount my Rode NTG2 on the XHA1 instead somehow? I know on camera mics are generally not a good idea, especially as the distance from the actor increases; but in this case if the camera is within 3-6 feet of the actor shouldn't the on camera mic capture pretty good audio? What is the maximum distance I should figure for for capture dialog audio using the XHA1 built in on camera mic?

No, IMHO. If you absolutely can't drop in a boom mic, then you're better off mounting the NTG2 on-camera, rather than using the camera's mic.

I'm curious, though: how does the weather affect the practicality of booming the shot?

Absolutely no excuse.

Tell us the real reason. That you dont have someone to boom for you.

It may be more convenient to try it with a camera-mounted mic, but your sound will be awful compared to doing it the right way. Good sound is essential and absolutely worth the effort it takes to get it. As they say, nothing says "amateur" more than bad sound.
