On camera light

Is it possible to find somewhere an on camera light who works with the same batteries than the HVX200 ?

Yeah I think an led based light would be your best bet, and the vidled the best of the bunch in its price range. I just picked up a zylight Z90 and have a second on the way. The power is awesome, the color changing is amazing, but the price is really stinkin high. But worth it to me. They will run on the HVX batteries but not for terribly long. I'll be using AB dionic 90's with mine. The vidled requires much less power and runs for hours on an HVX battery. And they are only $300 or so (i think). Bad news is that they are out of production right now, but coming back "soon". Might want to look at the micro from litepanels as well - runs on AA's.

Jeff,

How much output does the zylight z90 have relative to an incandescent, such as the Bescor 50w?

I tried the Vidled cool light and it did not have enough volume.

The lumen chart on the zylight site does not really provide much help.

I dont have a similar small tungsten to compare it to, sorry. I have a 250w pro-light that is definitely brighter :)

How does the lumen chart not help? The zylight delivers 143 lux at 6.6 ft and the bescor does 102 at the center, 60 at the edges with the dichroic filter at 6 ft, and 320/220 without the filter. The vidled coolled does 124 at 6 ft. Past 6 ft I would imagine the bescor will start to look better and better as the LED's are going to have quick falloff. The bescor is going to have a much narrower beam than either led light. All measurements are from Zylight and Vidled.

For distant punch I doubt any led will compete with incadescent. But for 4-6 ft from camera the lack of heat and longer run times make these fantastic as far as I'm concerned. I use a vidled dayled with great success for head and shoulders interviews. I needed something with some more punch to use on a stand as a small (very small) keylight and the z90 was the winner. Works like a charm. Have another one on the way for edge or background lighting.

When you say not enough volume, what do you mean? Are you looking for something with longer throw?

In comparing the vidled to the Bescor for light output, the Bescor 50w is the obvious winner. The vidled 6w seemed to be in the 20-25w range and yes it fell off quickly. When jelled for 3200k it was really cut back.

The Bescor has a little narrower beam but that is easily diffused. The only downside is the battery weight and life.

What I'm looking for is the benefits of LED (battery weight and life) and the power of the incandescent.

Vidled is promising that in it's next generation; but I'm curious if the Z90 will work.

The z90 has the same or at least similar falloff as the vidleds. Also note the z90 pulls 30watts of power on its highest setting. Closing in on 50w. I'm using mine with a AB dionic 90. If its the long throw you are after I'd just stick with incadescent.

Thanks for the answers and Sorry for the late reply guys but i was out of the country.

I read lots of good things about the varizoom light led but i can't find a place to buy it...!!!

I have a vidled and I've used lite panels. I find lite panels gel system much faster and easier to use. This is important because all of the LED lights out there have lousy color balance. Vidled requires taping gels to the front. Which I think is a bit ghetto.
