Looking at Frezzi and comparable pro-grade. Pluses would be small, perhaps dimmable, high efficiency, low profile best design are the top priorities. If i missed a good thread on this, appreciate a link. Gracias.
nice but *gulp* you weren't kiddin'! expensive is an understatement. how about a mini quartz sun gun for fill. the litepanel is more beauty for features, i'm doing shoestring docs.
It looks expensive at first glance, but... I've got a Frezzi Mini-Fill Dimmer model, fully kitted out with the barn doors, diffuser, dichroic, MFSB-2 softbox, and an 8-lb battery belt to run it, etc... I think I'm probably into it for $900 or so. So if you want a dimmable pro light, the LitePanels aren't really any more expensive. The main considerations are that the LitePanels are *always* soft, you'll never get the distance and throw that the Frezzi has, but the LitePanels are also cool (the Frezzi gets very hot) and the LitePanels don't need a big hulking battery belt, they're powered by their own battery.
yeah, the litepanels do look cool -- both color temp and looks-wise. the soft light is great for fill the only issue is output. also, be curious what the throw is like vis a vis angle and fall off. it's also nice to have a light with an edge on occasion since cameraman/woman do not live by soft boxes alone!
the specs on their site say the output is much more efficient than quartz so maybe it's worth a looksee. the fact they don't get hot is a blessing too for gun and run and not having to worry about putting in your bag hot.
I choose a Sachtler Reporter 75 (dimmable, barndoors, dichroic filter, handles
up to 75 W bulbs) with a SWIT batterie pack. A rental house here in Germany
made a package where the light and the battery came in a nice aluminium case
and it cost around 800 €.

I just got this one. I shoot news by day and weddings for extra cash. Works great for run-n-gun. Unfortunately, no dimming control, and the battery on your belt takes some getting used to.
I have a Frezzi Micro-Fill and let me say that I DON'T think it's worth all the money--this may because I don't use it often. But I've also used much cheaper lights (Bescor) and found them to be adequate.
If you ARE going to spend a lot of money, I remember thinking that I shoulda got the Frezzi Mini/Micro Sun-gun... last longer, is brighter, etc. If you need it to be tungsten, you can use the filter... once you apply the daylight filter to the Micro-fill you're not getting much light.
I,ve traveled all over the place with my Paglight and my DvRigPro { Paglight battery fits nicely and replaces the back weight metal plate on it ] It's quite durable and works well for me. Absolutely reccommend esp. for the price!
