On Camera LED/other Lighting Choices

I noticed on the Zylites website that they were also mentioning no rings in comparinson to "other" products so now I am curious as to how bad the "rings" are on the Lightpanels and whether they have bothered anyone who uses them.

To Vidled, your product seems to be extremely good for the price but I have to say that the enclosure looks kludged. I know for indie filmmaker types that is fine and maybe that is your intended market, but for paid pro users the product needs a more professional, not homemade looking enclosure. Appearances ARE important in the pro world.

Hey, no problems. Looks are subjective.
I can assure you, however, that there are plenty professional persons, and companies using our lights. In fact, I bet if you watch TV, some of it will be lit with a VIDLED.
We just sold 10 units again, this time going to a TV station; and they had two lights out in the field, testing them before making their purchasing decision.

Not trying to convince you, just offering some further info. It's all good...

Your are right, I know you guys are probably doing well with them especially when people watch the "durability" video.

It's not so much a criticism as much as a suggestion that down the road you might offer a more expensive but more polished unit. Somewhere in between your current product and the Lightpanels. Maybe more light output. Just a suggestion.

I have seen plenty of reports here praising your lights and especially the price so it's not my place to question thier value.

I am glad someone is trying to bring a little sanity to cost of these things for the people who are not getting big budget projects.

Understood.
It's simple economics. We designed our lights with following criteria:
1) Quality and quantity of light output
2) Durability
3) Ease of use & simplicity in design
4) Looks

It's how we could keep costs down.

Oh, and we have a new version as a prototype that IS brighter, and nicer "looking". But it will be quite a bit more expensive.

There's a short video on DV Gear Talk that shows a few shots with Litepanels. It would be interesting to put them side by side with the vidled and see the output on a subject just two-three feet away. I'd be willing to do the test if vidled will shoot us over a loaner. I have both the spot and flood Litepanel mini in my Kata bag ready to go.

Zylights work with any 9-20V DC source that can provide up to 30W (2.5A @ 12V). For DV shooters we are recommending the Tekkeon MP3300 and MP3400 rechargeable Li-poly batteries: http://www.tekkeon.com/site/products-mypowerall.php

The MP3300 will power the Z50 for about 1.5 hours, while the MP3400 will last
about 2 hours at full brightness. The batteries also come with an assortment
of adapters and their output voltage is adjustable to power other gear as well. The Z50 is an approved Tekkeon device, and we will be offering them for sale in our web store soon. In the meantime they are available from Tekkeon and other resellers.

Keep in mind that 30W is the maximum rating for the Z50. You will see ~25W
typical at full brightness, and dimming the light a little bit will greatly
reduce the current draw, that is the nature of LEDs.

On Camera LED/other Lighting Choices

Howdy! This is kind of embarrasing but I'm shooting a night time wedding with my HVX (I know, I know....) so I'm in the market for an on-camera light. Any recommendations? (cheap, good and out of control) Thanks in advance!

A search will reveal many threads that have covered this topic, but I would think that generally speaking you'll find people like VIDLEDs and Litepanels.

When you say at night... do you mean inside at night? What kind of venue? Have you been there at the time the wedding would take place to see what kind of light is present?

I just purchased a Litepanel with hot-shoe mount. It was very expensive, and I honestly have been a little dissapointed with the power of the light. Maybe I was just expecting too much, because of all the good press they get. I am a lighting newbie though, so I haven't used anything else, and wouldn't be able to accurately compare it to something. Positives for the Litepanel is defiently the fact that it outpus almost no heat. Also, you can get an adapter to use your camcorders batteries to power it. Also, the LED lights last a really long time. Oh, and it has a nifty dimmer that works very well.
