On Camera LED lighting reco please

I need to get an on-camera lighting system. I've been looking at the LED types of lighting in various catalogues. I would imagine that they're a lot cooler (temperature-wise) to work with than the tungsten or other types of lighting.
I would also think that the battery life would be longer. Does anyone have experience with any of the LED on cam lighting systems to share? A reco would be much appreciated. It would have to work with my DVX100Ap camera, of course. Thanks.

$225-$245 is Low cost??? Psh, you could buy the parts at Radio Shack and build one yourself for under $50 i bet

I agree. I've been saving LEDs over the years ( I made a dog collar with them so I can see where my pup's at in the dark).

I think someone made an on-camera LED in the DIY section. I'll look.

Do you have a motion sensor on the collar so it only lights up when the dog moves?

It would be cool if you put a sound sensor in the collar and multi-color lights so the lights would dance to the dog's barking

LOL

It's pretty ridiculus, actually. His collar is lit up like the sun, and I put a turkey bell (miniature cowbell) on him so I can hear him as well. I have a really big back yard and he likes to stalk critters. I thought I'd give the rabbits a heads-up.

RadioSchlock also sells microphones for $20 (I guess), but I can't see many of those on a boom on DVX/HVX shoots! :)
Believe me, there's A LOT more than $50 in PARTS alone in a VIDLED.

But hey, I am the first to applaud DIY efforts, so kudos to whomever that comes up with more devices that makes our job as viedographers easier!

You know, I've been thinking about just hacking one together myself. I bought a few LED mini flashlights to experiment with in my still photography. They work great with the gel pack samples since they're so small and fairly bright. It's easy to just cut small circles out of the gel and insert them in the bezel. Perhaps if I banded a few together I'd get enough light throw to do what I need it to do. The light is uneven, however. I'd would imagine that I'd have to rig on a softbox to diffuse the lighting somewhat. Hmmmm, all this before this weekend? I offered to shoot my nephew's wedding (no pressure, it's a favor. Can't beat the price $0). I'll post back re: my results.
