On Cam Monitors

Hello Listers,

My aging eyes need more help to focus, so I am considering a on cam monitor. Remember my prime objective is focus and I shoot HD. The newish Small DP6 seems to be a popular choice and would be on my short list and has 1280x800 resolution. I like the ides that they can upgrade the firmwear and the case is solid, and I can run it with my Panny bats.

Other companies, Marshall for one, say "don't be fooled by higher resolution". The V-LCD50-HDMI monitor and other more expensive Marshall monitors have only 800x480 (see link). Even the highly thought of Panasonic BT-LH80 is only 800x450.

So what matters here? Will a 800x480 monitor focus as well as a 1280x800 monitor. Given that the focus assist aids will make a difference, it seems to me that more pixels should be better. Am I missing something here? As George C Scott said in Dr Strangelove, "there is a pixel gap".

I will spend enough to get good results, but don't want to overspend.

Thanks for your input.

I'm interested in this too. I could go for a DP6 or TV logic VFM-056W, but neither of these are available at B&H, which is a real downer as I'm only going to be visiting NY for a week at best, so are there any comparable options?

Small products are direct only at this point. Last night, I did a Google search and found several comparison reviews on the net, one by Phil Bloom. Mostly, people compare the DP6 to various Marshall products. Although folks did sing the praises of both, it doesn't seem like a perfect world in either case. Folks loved the DP6 except for color rendition. The construction quality of the Small seems to be the best. Others liked the Marshall for better color control. Both seemed like they would do the job for me with regard to focus. I am wishing there were more comments on the whole resolution disparity question.
