On board standard microphone...what use is it..

Does anyone use the DVX on board microphone ?

I am considering removing it (and replacing it with a microphone connector) so that I can make better use of my mattebox. I want to slide my two stage filter trays back closer to to the front element.

I figure that I will only ever use the XLRs in their various set ups and if I ever need a camera microphone ( say for ID slating) I can plug something into the neww connector.

Dont imagine I would ever use the generalised stereo sound for much that I could not achieve with my new set up.

Thoughts....

I know of a few uses.

1. The family outing, and thanksgiving day shoots when convenience is more important than the best sound possible.

2. Capturing ambient sound in general, and in stereo.

3. run & gun as a one man operation.

Even when I'm shooting MOS, I like to have some audio there just in case I need it for something later.

...ditto, it serve as a guiline for ADr when needed, or i can add notation to the scene during the shoot.

Thanx guys - points noted.

I will probably go ahead and relocate the onboard unit to the shoe on the handle in a custom built block. (Front of the onboard mike also contains remote sensor and tally light.).

It is important that I get the mattebox and the filter trays right back to the front of the lens element ( where they should be to minimise reflection and help with the not insignificant problem of photographing dust / marks on the filters due to the extreme depth of field in these cameras).

Also :my filter trays rotate and at the moment the microphone obstructs this function.
