Omni caps for AT4900b body

if you need a hyper, there aren't many choices, making 4053b a good one.
if you need an omni, there are many choices, and the omni cap from AT isn't cheap, not to mention you'll still need a body (not cheap either) to put the cap on.

Henry,

I might have mentioned I have a couple of 4053b mics which have been a improvement over my older Oktavas. Do you use other omnis that you can recommend. I have omni caps for the Oktavas, but have considered an upgrade and if the AT omni caps are good, would be a thrifty option.

I think which mic (cap) is better really depends on why you need it and how you use it.

I don't have the omni cap from AT, but have considered it for quite a while as I do have a 4053b mic. However, I'm planning to buy from B&H a matched pair of NT55 next month, which come with 2 omni caps from Rode. To me, I only need an omni mic like this in mainly 2 scenarios: where proximity effect is undesirable but hard to avoid with a cardioid mic, and where this gives me an easy way to capture ambient sound. Additionally, I'm considering putting 1 omni cap on my NT4, and then treating the NT4 as the equivalent of NT5 able to capture ambient sound on a separate track (I'll have to see how it works though).

As far as I can see, if I had Oktavas omni caps, they might be good enough. But I don't. Alternatively, an omni cap from Rode costs only $90 (cf $200 per cap from AT) at B&H, and is compatible with NT 4/5/55/6. Besides, a matched pair of NT55 gives you a matched pair of omni caps to use with any NT 4/5/55/6. Cheap and flexible. Not to mention 10-year warranty behind each purchased mic from Rode.
