OMG...

Re: OMG...

What an ass of a father. Yeah, this will show the child. Why dont you talk to the kid. Whats with taking the PS away? "waaaaaaaa, it was Dom" Yeah, shows the priorities. Anyone who spends $200 dollars on a bottle of alcohol is a moron.

Re: OMG...

Lol that is awesome!!!! That sucks for the kid..ha i am lucky to have a cool Dad who would share a bottle of Dom Perignon with me over a nice dinner... and a couple of Romeo Y Julietas after ;)

Re: OMG...

I say way to go dad!

I have a day job as a substitute teacher, and I see HUNDREDS of these type of dipshit kids ALL DAY LONG.  It's amazing how much society has changed even since I was in High School in the mid 90's.  Changed for the worse.

I do think the Dad is a little weird complaning about WHAT the kid drank vs. the fact that he drank in the first place.  If your kid's drinking at 13, in my opinion, you haven't done your job as a parent.  But I am glad he punished the kid with something that will have an impact.  Hopefully the kid won't stab his dad to death while he's sleeping. You know, cause of all that video game violence.

Re: OMG...

Hilarious!

Incidentally, it was the mother selling the PS2. Seems like pretty appropriate punishment to me. The bottle of Dom Perignon was a gift, but that's beside the point. It wasn't his to drink and he shouldn't have been drinking anyway. He was disrespectful and destructive and he needed to see there are *consequences* to his actions. If it sounds harsh--think again.

How about if your kid was playing with your DVX without your permission and broke the matte box you were going to sell and damaged the camera--and didn't give a sh*t. Would you shrug it off? A talk is good and you should always be talking with your kids, but they need to understand that actions bring consequences.

I can't believe some of the behavior of my 8 year-old daughter's friends. They come over and feel free to root through drawers and cabinets, take and mess with any object without asking and smartmouth me at will. They'll ignore polite repeated requests and laugh. These are little girls! Some of them lack even basic manners, courtesy, or respect. And I'm not talking about normal goofy kid stuff--I'm pretty indulgent when it come to that. I'm talking completely out-of-control. It's clear that some parents can't be bothered with simple discipline. These parents buy their kids everything they ask for, give in to every whine and whim, and don't impart the concept of simple respect for people and property.

Selfish, indulgent kids grow into selfish, indulgent adults and they're a lot of fun to work for or date or interact with. :-)

Re: OMG...

I wouldn't think that the parents were too easy going...simply BECAUSE of the fact that they were so quick to sell the kid's PS2, and seem to be proud of it. If they gave in to the kid all the time, they'd likely not be so gung-ho about having given the kid what they figured he deserved.

It seems to me that it's more the parents getting back at the kid, rather than actually trying to teach him something...because if they were the kind of parents who liked to actually teach their kids things, then odds are he'd know better than to drink a couple hundred dollars worth of his parent's booze, BECAUSE he'd have been taught already.

I bet that's one unhappy household...

Re: OMG...

It's hard to read too much into a humorous eBay ad--it might not even be true and who's to say what the real story is. If the parents had been teaching the kid all along--maybe it's justified. If they didn't draw the line beforehand--it's capricious. Who knows?

I'm not implying that *these* parents are indulgent. Kids do dumb stuff--it's a fact of life--regardless of what they're taught. I know I did. It *sounded* like he'd been geting a "pass" on using the PS2 as a punishment and the parents got pushed over the edge. Selling the PS/2 is not that harsh. I did notice that she wasn't selling the games as well. A few weekends of mowing lawns and I'm sure he can buy another PS2.

Whoa whoa whoa. Now thats justplain nasty talk there. Then the kid would be for sale on ebay!

Re: OMG...

i'm wondering how many hours the ps2 has and if it came from an authorized dealer... :P

Re: OMG...

Sorry John, I had to remove the post, I couldn't tell if people were going to laugh or call me psycho.. :(

Re: OMG...

Personally I agree with the parents selling the PS2. If that's what it takes to make the kid understand that (1) he really went too far this time, and that (2) he's got to compensate for the damaged bugle, then so be it. It's not like they're beating the kid or sending him to boot camp !

You should talk to your kids, have fun with them, but also teach them/show them what life's about. And part of that is making them understand (the hard way, if all else fails) that sooner or later, you pay for your own mistakes. Letting kids believe that they can get away with anything is not doing them a favor. Most kids understand that most of the time, but sometimes you have to put your foot down.

Having said that, I found extremely weird that the father felt he had to go public about his motives. Selling the PS2 is fine, explaining (and in such great detail) why he's doing it sounds more like revenge than anything else, and that's not a good thing at all. Also the money bit sounded more like self-justification, which you shouldn't need to expand on if you feel you're doing the right thing, morally speaking.

*And* why in hell would you need a corkscrew to open a bottle of Dom Pérignon ?? ??? ;)

Re: OMG...

..sounds like they need to spend more time with thier child. its like whole parents vs. child thing going on there..instead of one united family. if the kid felt like he was a real part of the group he wouldnt be so compelled to rebel against or disrespect it.. imho, the parents should use the money from the sale and take their kid somewhere where they can hang out, and get to know eachother a little more. anything to help. sad times we live in..
