My point earlier wasn’t that NBC was doing a bad job it was more that as an audience, with so much choice, we may have become desensitized.
During the pairs figure skating they showed a feature about how the Russian’s had to overcome a horrific fall and what it affected to them, then to see them make it through their routine, a little shaky but no falls was cool. But then the Chinese pair has a terrible fall in the beginning of their program, which completely stops the competition, they make sure she was not seriously injured before continuing then they go on to win the silver was awesome. I thought NBC did a good job of highlighting the human interest aspect of the sport, then as an audience we got to witness this drama play out in competition. It was inspiring.
Unfortunately for us Nike sponsored Bode Miller really putting him out there, I’m not sure how inspiring a story he is just because he claimed to be drunk for an event he won. He seems like a very talented skier, but it also appears that he’s getting caught up in his own hype. NBC didn’t create this, Nike did. Conversely to that you had Visa take the same gamble with Michele Quan, who graciously retired from competition for health reasons. For Visa that gamble might pay off.
There are a lot of inspiring stories in the Olympics and I hope that NBC continues to show them rather than showing off the “American” victories. Not to take anything away from the snowboarders but I’m not that inspired by the fact that they dominated the half pipe. I am pulling for Shaun White picking up on the American figure skater…
