Oliver Stone / Tony Scott effect?

Hey all, sorry for the wierd title to the thread. its the only way I can describe it. I've seen this motion effect in their movies. I know how to do it when you are shooting film. You would shoot at 12 frames per second. Then when you havwe it teransfered you transfer it 12 frames per second instead of 24 fps. So when it place back at 24fps it is sort of choppy. Oliver stone did this alot in Natural Born Killers and JFK. And Tony Scott did it alot in Domino and Taking of Pleham 123.

I am shooting wth a GH1 and edting in Vegas. I also have After Effects. Is there a plugin that I can get to obtain this effect? Or can I shoot a certain way with the GH1 and obtain it in Vegas? Any help would greatly be appreciated..

Matt

If I'm understanding you correctly, there's a effect on FCP called "strobe" that does that. I guess if you don't use FCP, this post doesn't really help you. Unless Vegas has something similar.

The effect you're talking about is the result of undercranking during filming, then stepprinting. This could equate to DSLR by shooting a series of stills in burst mode with a slow shutter (let's say 8fps), then drop the stills into your timeline in sequence at a rate of 3 frames per still, giving you playback at 24fps in realtime but with a streaking effect.

Interesting... I think I'll experiment with this.

wait on GH1 when you put the shutter lower than the frame rate, i.e. lower than 1/24, doesn't it effectively become the framerate in video mode which means let's say you select 1/8 shutter this means you will be shooting at 8 frames per second. This selection (lower than like 1/30) I believe can only be done in 720 mode. But I'm pretty sure I have done it so that if you set the shutter to as low as 1/2 which is half a second then you'll be doing 2 frames per second. If you want 12 as you said then set it to 1/12 (if it has 1/12 specifically I can't remember)

everything from 1:30 on is step printed. notice how every pedestrian is blurred from the longer exposure time.

If you are looking for something choppy but not blurry from a slow shutter, you can right click the clip in Vegas and change the under sample rate (I think that is what it's called, I don't have it open in front of me) to 12fps or whatever you want and it will play the clip in realtime but drop frames depending on what you have it set at. Might be just what you are liking for and is dead easy to do.
