smallhd just came out with oled monitors and emphasize color reproduction/depth and true blacks.
they look great and tempting, but why would oled be necessary if most of the time we are shooting flat profile like cinestyle anyway?
thanks in advance
Here's my two cents - and I'm interested to hear what others have to say:
1. Accuracy is accuracy. The closer I can get to seeing what my camera is outputting, and what I'm going to be dealing with in the editing suite, the better.
2. I know RED cameras (along with other cinema cameras?) have a built in feature called a Look Up Table (LUT). A LUT provides us with a kind of temporary preview of what the RAW footage will look like when certain settings are applied in post production. The more accurate the monitor to view this rendering on, the better!
Because generally you shouldn't be monitoring in log gamma - you have no idea how your image is exposed if you do. Working on the Alexa, for example, I monitor in REC709 and record in LogC or ARRIRAW, mostly because. I want my monitor to be calibrated right so I know it's accurate - I like to light using a light meter anyway, but if the light looks two stops over on the monitor I might go over and fix it only to find that the monitor I was using was inaccurate and the light was actually perfect.
