CAMCORDERS: Older Panasonic AG-HVX200K P2 - File-Capture Extraction

Hi Gang

I have an older AG-HVX200A P2 (never used it). I remember there was a complication in capturing/extracting video in need of certain drivers or software? Is it possible to simply capture video as one used to do thru the IEEE 1394 port when capturing Mini DV? Or is it more complicated? BTW, (for now) I'm using Windows 7 Pro. I also have an older G5 Desktop with OS11

Thank You

It has been a veeeeery long time since I used that cam, but if memory serves...

If you're recording to tape, then you'd use firewire (usb?? whichever that cam has) to capture into your editing system. If you're using P2, easiest would be to get a P2 card reader to ingest the footage, though I *think* you might b able to connect the camera via firewire/usb to ingest.

You should be aware, however, that generally, you can't simply double click on a P2 media file and have it play. You need to either: load it into a player app, such as Panasonic's P2 Player, or import it into your editing system in order to see it. Hope this helps.

Hello asergi - Thanx for your comment

Very sorry for the late reply ...

This all boils down to the fact I need at least Mac OS[SUP]®[/SUP] X 10.5.8 (Leopard) in order to see/recognize the P2 Panasonic Video File. Yes that's correct, I cannot simply point and click to a P2 file and play it without an application to do so ...

This is the program I'd need (below) to open and edit HD P2 files ... (NOT SD Mini DV Tape)

Thank you ...

hvx recorde in mxf dvcpro file format, which is not easy to work with, you can convert the files to other formats, such as Proverse, then they will be recognized by Premier, also some versions of Premier and DaVinci support dvcpro.

To connect to the computer via USB ( forwindows) or 1394 ( for mac) cable, connect it to the system, then hold the button on the back of the camera for a few seconds, when the light turns green, the memory icon will be displayed on the computer, then copy the contents of the card or convert it to another format.

If you find it difficult to work with mxf file or you have another camera, use it!
Good luck

I don't know anything about this Panasonic camera, but I can assure you that MXF files are not a problem for Premiere, Resolve, FCPX, etc. All Sony pro camcorders have been shooting MXF for more than a decade. No need to transcode. The NLEs don't care about the wrapper.

Hi Mr. Doug Jensen, I haven't seen you for a few days and I'm glad, the mxf file that dvcpro uses has a more difficult structure than xdcam, they are not easily recognized in the software and need to be converted or an intermediary that the user has to install. That's it, there are ways to open it, but it's not as easy as other videos.

P2 users know, I wrote for one of the hvx users who had a problem transferring the file to the computer

I'm not sure what you mean. Are you asking if you can import MXF files and then export them as somehing else? If so, the answer is yes. Exporting from an NLE is always completely independent of what format was used for acquisition by the camera. I generally record MXF files, but my exports from Premiere and Resolve are usually ProRes or MP4, depending on the purpose of the export. And I never transcode for editing -- I always edit native.

Yes, you are right, I noticed wrote the question wrong, sorry,
One of the problems with the camera is that the files cannot be displayed in the Windows you do not have any previews or photos of the shots, and only a number and a separate audio file are recorded, if you have only taken one or two shots. You may be able to recognize them, but if you have more than ten shots, as in a documentary, then it is difficult to identify and import them, so Panasonic has put an intermediary software for previewing P2 files on the site for users to use. Install your own system, installing this software is not mandatory, but it helps editors in importing... Idont think this is nessesry.

I don't know anything about the HVX200 or how messy its workflow might be. I just I thought it was important to point out that the files being in an MXF wrapper is not the root of the problem. There's are no compatibility issues with using MXF files from other cameras in any modern professional NLE.
