older laptop, win7

I've got a Tecra a9 laptop with 4 gig of ram, core2 duo 2.2 proc and a NVIDIA Quadro NVS 130M with 256 meg of ram. It runs win xp pro...has anybody upgraded a similar laptop to win 7 and Adobe cs5 yet?

I'd like to hear how it works with new software.

as far as i know, you can't install cs5 on xp.

you need win7 x64

i can tell you, without software or hardware mercury enabled, cs4 in mac os leopard runs smoother than cs5 in windows 7 x64. which means fcp in leopard is still faster than cs5 in win 7.

it's still the same kind of development, every software edition requires 2x as much power as the previous one to do the same performance kind of deal.

you will need the mercury software or hardware enabled to get any kind of smooth playback at 1x or 2x playback speed. fcp is still ahead in terms of hardware to performance ratio.

the mercury engine software acceleration will not work right out of the box, you will at least need to upgrade your gfx card drivers.

i also did not see all the sequence settings on the cs5 version i have seen, it's the same as cs4 when it came out, you'll have to wait to upgrade a few versions.

i did see more sequence settings in some videos on the web, but not in the released version, maybe they are still testing things out.

Every software edition upgrade does seem to use more processing power to do the same task...that is the issue.
I have 4 gig of ram and xp 32 bit only sees 3 gig. I don't know if the extra demands of win 7 will be offset by having that extra gig of ram available.

without mercury hardware acceleration, you don't really get anything new in premiere cs5.

and if that's the case you either get a new system with an approved card that enables the mercury engine or just stick with premiere cs4 if that's what you had before.

i'm not even sure if the mercury engine speeds up any video format, or just the few ones we have seen videos off on the web.

another option for windows would be edius, i never tried edius before, and i don't know a lot about it.

but it seem like a good option to try out(i 'll try it in the next few days). i'm not a big fan of premiere i just use it whenever i am on a pc and don't have fcp available. the only reason i have it is because it comes in a bundle with other adobe software that i use.
