older iMac with Firewire 400 - able to edit HD ?

My iMac is several years old now, and in addition to purchasing a high capacity external drive, I need to invest in either FCP or Premiere. But I'm concerned that my older firewire port may not be able to handle the data rates necessary for HD editing...

Can anyone comment?
