can someone tell me the story behind the two systems. ive heard that the new g5's can't do a few things the older g5 could do. sorry for such a broad question, but...

oh and by the way im speaking of the 2ghz dual g5 :)

thanks.

That's a very broad question...

I have no idea what your sources mean, unless it's a Tiger vs. Panther thing.
Can you be more specific?

My experience with the old (dual processor 2.0 is what I edit on) vs. the new (dual-core 2.0 and 2.3 that I have installed at several clients) is that the new ones are faster. Not tremendously, but a bit.
That's about all the differences I know of.

wait until intel based powermacs come out within the next 3 months (or even next week). FCP 6 will be compiled and tuned for this. If you are doing HD, might be worth the wait....

Remember that the LOW end Macs are coming out on Intel chips this year. The HIGH end Macs will not convert for awhile. Don't expect to run FCP 6 on an Intel Mac for another year or two.

Oh, the dual core units can also install twice the RAM the old G5s could.

I heard that the older G5's will let you edit on the older versions of Final Cut Pro and the newer G5's you can only edit with Final Cut Pro 5.

There are lots of hardware differences between the two versions: RAM is faster, PCI-e instead of X, dual Gigabit, faster graphics cards, dual-core chips.
As far as performance (other than a speed increase) and "letting you do something" there is no difference.

With the following caveats:

PCI-e on the new G5s is NOT backwards compatible. If you have a PCI or PCI-x card and want to use it in a new G5, you're out of luck (I'm sure someone will make an adapter at some point, tho).

FCP HD (4) looks for an AGP graphics card and will not boot on the new G5s! But, this is easily worked around by telling FCP to ignore that restriction:

Maybe that's what the person was orginally talking about?
