Oldboy

old boy was cool, except when it starts to go all over the map in the last act... Too bad, it would have been a real winner.....

Yeah, Oldboy is pretty much one of the best movie I've ever seen. Exciting from beginning till end. But this is pretty much the only film that I liked from the Trilogy of Vengeance (Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, Oldboy, Sympathy for Lady Vengeance). Mr. Vengeance was just a boring affair where Park substituted weird characters and visuals for a story.

Lady Vengeance was much better in term of a story but still far below Oldboy. Actually if it wasn't for the last 15-20 minutes Lady Vengeance wouldn't be worth watching at all. The movie wasn't boring but the story unfolds in a very confusing manner.

I would recommend a short film by Park, it's called "Cut." I saw it as part of the Three...Extremes horror collection. The film is about a director who is terrorized by an insane extra. Great cimatography, directing and the story for the most part was very good.

I agree that Lady Vegeance wasn't equal to Oldboy, but only because I think people's expectations of it came into play. But I disagree about Mr. Vengeance. I think it's great in its own right; I think many people just don't have the patience to watch it slowly unfold visually. It's a more contemplative film, and it chooses to show things visually rather than explicitly say it through dialogue or internal monologue...which is far harder to achieve IMO. Plus, it compliments the fact that the main character was deaf, really putting the viewer into the shoes of the main character and experiencing things as he would experience. I also appreciated the underlying social commentary. So I think it was definitely a smart movie, maybe not tolerable for some people, but you can't discount the brilliance of it.

Each of his films are different to say SFMV is unwatchable is stupid he wanted to show different types of revenge in each film.

One to gain something, after losing everything. (SFMV)
One to get back what was taken from you. (OLDBOY)
One to make things right. (LADY V)

All with different feelings

One with an endless cycle (SFMV)
One with happiness (OLDBOY)
One with though justified, still empty inside. (LADY V)

Also Pace

One takes place with like a few weeks time but its long and gruling. (SFMV)
One long but faster paced due to inner monologue, he tells you what you need to know and he looking and your looking with him. (OLDBOY)
One takes you back through present and past. Showing you all the deatil nesscessary. Then giving you a persent and what about the future of these people. (LADY V)

If you ask me he showed many different kinds of vengence and how its not always so sweet to get.

In SFMV and Oldboy, all the vengeance never went according to plan, because of unexpected external circumstances.

In Lady Vengeance, everything goes according to plan, but the vengeance doesn't fulfill them in the way they thought it would. It deals more with the internal void.

i hated sympathy for mr vengeance but loved oldboy. i bought the 3 disc version only to discover that the 2 bonus discs didn't have subs. :(

i should've waited fro the US release

What the?!

SfMV was great :crybaby:

yeah a lot of people really liked it. but i guess i dont look enough asian cinema cause i found the script and the way character reacted quite ridiculous, sometimes it's just the difference between cultures i guess.

Great movie...but man...those Korean filmmakers are twisted. Thank god the American remake with Will Smith was scrapped. I doubt it would be anywhere near as intense as this version.

Chan-wook Park is the man.
Check out these films;
JSA
Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
The guy is BADASS. His filmmaking is beautiful, horrible(in a good way) and emotional. Very few can spin emotion like this guy. He is almost unique.

I haven't seen all his films. I'm waiting to see Lady Vengeance. It's hard to find his stuff with out selling you're arm.

He is already a master. I wonder what the future will hold?

Lady Vengeance is my favorite. It's up on instant view netflix right now...in fact all of his films are up on there now. Oldboy is dubbed though...boo!
