Oldboy

maybe indeed my own pretensions are falling into the judgement of this movie, as policar has made pretty clear. thats unfortunate but i still feel that its a terrible movie. and, ill admit, i know nothing of the "monomyth" and wouldnt dare compare Buddha and Neo's materialism, in any context cause i dont think that the movie went that far. BUT, in very plain terms, the first Matrix (the rest were terrible as hiderocket said), the first really did have some interesting ideas (i.e. the allegory, the man who walks out of the cave, which is almost exactly Neo), besides all the excellent explosions.

but too much matrix talk. c.g. eads, i think you are right that i might be trying to give too much of a reason that i didnt like this movie, but dont i have to defend my opinion when, it seems, a greater portion of the filmmaking community loved this film? i wouldnt like people to just say, "i didnt like that movie cause it was dumb."

on original ideas, i wouldnt try to claim that all of my favorite movies have them, what all of them DO have is either original, or unoriginal ideas, executed extraordinarily well. Oldboy fell very short in this capacity. also, people keep on commenting that this is part of a series, and that you cant understand this movie without seeing the whole series. well, honestly, that is a grave failure. if you need to see them all to understand it then make that very clear to ANYONE that is going to watch this movie, or put them all on a disk, or, hell, make a nine hour movie. but, like many hou hsiao-hsien (terrible movies) fans say, you must understand and see all of his movies to get any one of them, is a totally outrageous statement.

spidey, im glad we agree on someting. fight club IS a truly brilliant film. c.g. eads, the ideas in fight club are very similar to nihilistic tendencies in russian in the late 19th century. (if interested, read Fathers and Sons by Turgenev. pretty interesting, if not excruciatingly slow-moving book.) people were indeed terrorizing the populace. but yes, the possibility of a mass-army is a totallly unrealistic possibility, but, does that matter? the difference is that oldboy didnt even have IDEAS behind it, just pure, and for me at least, unrecognizable emotion. which is good in some movies, but, what can i say, i didnt like it at all in this one.

maybe we've talked about this movie for too long?

no we just got started. I dont see the appeal of the matrix on it mythological bases. that movie is fiction as well and you find that more believeable than oldboy?

I saw this movie when they released it in theaters for NYC.

It was such an awesome revenge film. Lot's of action and violence with a good enough story to go with it.

i'm very interested to see what they'll do in the remake of this. Does anybody have any information about the production?

done by Justin Lin who made Better Luck Tommorrow Which was about a asian american teens in america. It was really good won some awards etc. I heard of a few people playing the part but i dun think it would work nic cage? i mean he an ok actor but not oldboy material i also heard gary oldman that would be sweet. other than that the project is on hold since justin lin is still shooting stuff on his contract froom the studios now he has to make fast and the furious 3. dont like the series but if he makes it and its good then i might have too.
