Old Skool Progressive Cams - Know any?

Does anyone know of progressive cams that came before the DVX100, AG-EZ1, XL1/1s/2, GL1/2, and JY/GRHD1? I need one thats under $500 for projects that i've tried shooting in interlaced and porting to progressive but just dont look the same. Alot of cams have that progressive photo feature, but I need one that records it to tape in progressive (30fps most likely) just like the above cams. Thanks!

Well, the DVX would be the first "actual progressive scan" camera for consumers. The XL1 and GL series just used a deinterlacing technique, which brings me to my next point. There are no cameras that shoot progressive scan and are anywhere neer $500. HOwever, you should be able to achive a very similar look to the Gl2/XL1 motion by deinterlacing your footage in post.

wow that's impressive, what happened to that line of cameras. Why the switch back?

Re: Old Skool Progressive Cams - Know any?

Don't know... it was a big deal back when they were introduced, as Canon is of course well-known as a still-photo company, and so with the progressive-scan cameras they were advertising how they were effectively taking 30 still photos every second. Then with the Elura 2 or Elura 20 or 40 or whatever, pro-scan was gone...

Re: Old Skool Progressive Cams - Know any?

I did some more digging and found that JVC actually made some progressive cams as well. The DVL9800 and the DVM80/DVM90. Only problem is that i can't find any on ebay. The new Opturas and Eluras hide the older models quite well, making the search tedious.

The Optura was released in 1997, and yes, it was touted as the world's first consumer video camera with a progressive-scan CCD.

Even the second-generation Optura, the Optura Pi, I believe had no progressive scan.

The Optura Pi actually does have progressive scan. Canon calls their progressive mode "Digital Motor Drive(tm)"

Barry (or any one else that has one of these cameras) which have you heard or experienced to have the better image quality? How about low light? Progressive scan at that price..? Sounds like the perfect little emergency camera for when the DVX100 goes down. Love to hear more about them or any others any one can offer.

Re: Old Skool Progressive Cams - Know any?

I remember my Optura was garbage in low-light. And you didn't have an option to not use gain, it was automatic, so you'd need to judge whether or not you had enough light otherwise - BAM! - grainy picture.

It most definitely was a consumer camera, but for the price I paid for it ($1,000 CAD) it got the job done for what it was worth.

Re: Old Skool Progressive Cams - Know any?

I have one of the original Opturas and I still like using it for some things. They originally sold for around $2600 in 1997. It has "photo" mode, it looks like an SLR, and it has very slow shutter speeds for some fun effects. I still use it for family and school things. Also I use it for capture. I've seen a few on eBay, but they are hard to find.

Thanks Mike and pptphoto. Any voices out there for the old Elura? How does it measure up?
