Old shopping center shoot..

Just wondering if anyone has ever shot in a store that is now closed or maybe an "eye sore" shopping center. Did you have to go through any obstacles to shoot in there? I live down the street from an old rundown shopping center and I was thinking about trying to shoot some stuff for a music video in one of the stores. Its been closed for years but the lights are still on in one of the stores! There is a sign in the window saying space for sale or lease. Just been wondering if its even worth looking into.

Call the number on the sign and see what kind of location fee they would need. Make sure you have production insurance as they will ask to see a policy.

Depending on where you live, like a high traffic zone for film production, they'll want insurance. Some might not ask for it but you might want to get it just to back yourself up in case you burn down the place on accident or put a hole in the wall. If you're doing minor things you can probably get away without. You'll probably have to pay a month's rent for a rental to make it worth their time and risk.

Find a place that's slated for demolition, if you can. We needed a strip mall we could remodel to our requirements for an NBC show, and our locationeers found us one in Monterey Park...maybe it's still standing. Anyway, the owners will be much less finicky about what you do to a place like that.
