old Lowel Pro lights

Just inherited 2 Lowel Pros with stands. Warning on side to read the instructions, which I don't have. Is there anything I need to know, beyond the obvious "mount on stand, focus, adjust barn doors, turn on, etc...."?

Re: old Lowel Pro lights

get some sand bags to go with them and don't touch the bulb with your bare hands. If you already know that then good. ;D

Re: old Lowel Pro lights

Thanks. I've also been told: point it away from people when you turn it on, in case it explodes. And let it cool down for 10 minutes before you move it.

Re: old Lowel Pro lights

Pretty much the same stuff you'd do with any tungsten lights. I was changing a bulb in a Lowell Pro once, the grip didn't realize what I was doing, plugged it in and turned it on. They get to about a gazillion degrees before God hears about it. Ouch! Good little lights. Great for hair lights, accents, etc. Enjoy.

Re: old Lowel Pro lights

If you have them on for a while, then turn them off, are you supposed to wait before you turn them on again? I had em on 10 minutes, off 10, and the bulb blew. But it's an old bulb, so maybe coincidence?

Re: old Lowel Pro lights

It was probably just that bulb's time to go. I've turned lights on and off much more frequently than that without problems.

Re: old Lowel Pro lights

Know a good place to buy them? I found a place called tapeonline that has 'em for eight bucks, compared to $19 at B&H. Maybe there's a catch ???

Re: old Lowel Pro lights

There are different grades of bulbs, and also different color temperatures. The higher grade bulbs cost twice more but last 4 times longer in hours of usage. Also, cheaper consumer bulbs with the same mount sometime have 2900 deg K, when you should usually have 3200 deg K to be consistent with other fixtures. I have 2 pro's and I have never waited to turn them on. I always flick them on/off repeatedly to gauge shadows. I like pro's because you can put more accessories on them than a Ford Crown Vic. The only cautions with pro's is high-heat and angle of usage. Never tip up or down greater than 20 degrees angle. ;) The bulb will melt and blow.
