Old audio in new clothes...

Well, I need to provide the new clothes. But let me start from the beginning. I need a way to hook my mic (XLR) to my computer. I need just one mic since all I'm doing is voice overs. All I have is the not so good built in sound card.

Since I'll have to buy some hardware I'd like it to also facilitate the transfer of my old recordings, currently on reel-to-reel, into digital format. I got the reel-to-reel machine, Tandberg TD-20A, still in working condition. And transferring my old vinyl albums would be a nice bonus.

I've been looking at the M-Audio 2496 PCI card, but it has no XLR input. I'd love to have an external unit, but I'm not sure if they will let me hook up the tape deck and turntable. The M-Audio Firewire Solo looks good.

I'll be using a PC running XP or Win-7 (both 64bit) and Vegas Pro 8.1. My budget is whatever it takes to get a good solution that is neither overkill nor a "consumer gadget". (I've long since learned that cheap tools aren't.)

Needless to say; I could use some guidance here.

From my own experience, M-Audio's PCI based interfaces are solid (I'm using a Delta 1010lt and an Audiophile 192 and am very happy with both) but their external stuff (I've also got a couple of their USB interfaces, the model numbers escape me) is far more trouble than it's worth, and M-Audio seems completely uninterested in supporting it. Last I tried, their 64bit support was pretty limited for the external kit.

Mark of the Unicorn and Presonus make some good firewire interfaces, and most music stores will probably have simple XLR/USB adapters in the $50 range, no idea if they supply phantom power or sound any good.

What mic are you planning to hook up?

Right now I got an Azden shotgun, bought before I had the sense to ask here first, but I'm planning on replacing it later this year. I'm just getting into the sound part of video production, so I'm starting form scratch and I'd like to do it right the first time.

The Fucusrite Saffire Pro 24 is good.
